Water Filtration Process And Its Benefits

By: Brad Hamilton

The use of alkaline water has changed millions of people's lives in world we are ling today. The filtration of water involves the removal of unwanted chemicals and other biological contaminants. In normal cases water if filtered for use by human beings but other purposes may also necessitates the filtration of water common among them industrial and chemical uses. The process of purifying drinking water is physical and it is commonly used by many people. Drinking water is purified in order to reduce the concentration of contaminants such as foreign particles, bacteria, fungi to name a few, which may be harmful to the people's health.
Water that has been processed for mass distribution normally has to be approved by the organs that are set aside to check the quality of products, especially those that are to be consumed by human beings. A water consumer can not tell whether the water packaged for sale is fit for intake by just looking at it. Traditionally, people used to boil water to get rid of harmful content in the water. That method has since been said to be ineffective and as a result people have turned to filtrated water.
Water should be pumped from the source through pipes to storage tanks. The physical infrastructure that holds water should be made of appropriate materials so as to avoid introducing contaminants into the water.
Distilled water has a pH of 7.0 (neutral) and it is neither acidic nor alkaline. The water pH can be used to ascertain the acidity of water in which sea water has pH of 8.3, which is a bit alkaline. Acid water has lower pH of less than 7.0 and soda ash or lime is added raise the pH. Lime water is common and cheap compared to the other but it makes water hard. Water should be made a bit alkaline so as coagulation and flocculation to work properly and to also help in reducing of dissolving leads into the water in lead pipes.
Filtration is the final step in getting rid of the remaining suspended particles and unsettled floc in your water. One of the common water filters is the rapid sand filter which allows water to move vertically through sand which has a layer of activated carbon or anthracite coal on top of the sand. When cleaning this type of filter, water is run quickly upwards through the filter, in the opposite direction. This method of cleaning is commonly referred to as backflushing or backwashing.
