Twitter is a hugely popular social networking platform which is used by millions of people around the world. It allows you to create short tweets, which are messages that are up to 140 characters in length. Your messages can be viewed by anyone who has an Internet connection. In order to use Twitter to promote your business you will need to follow a few steps. This article takes a look at how you can successfully use twitter to promote your business and receive a big online following.

Signing up to Twitter is a quick and simple process. All you have to do is go to the main website and then follow the sign up instructions. You will need to choose a username. This username will be used everytime that you post a tweet, and when people want to send you a message they will use @ sign followed by your username so that you will be able to read it. You will want the username to contain your company name, but you will often find that the exact username that you want is already taken, so you may have to be creative. You can use a play on words, you can include the location of your company (although not always a good idea should you choose to expand) or you can also incorporate underscores which are allowed on Twitter. Avoid using numbers in your username unless they are part of your business name as they can look unprofessional. After you have signed up you will be send an email verification link which you will need to click on, and then you are ready to customize your Twitter account.

There are three main ways you can customize your account: by using a personal picture, by uploading a background image, and by writing a company bio. You should complete all three of these things to make your profile look more professional. The profile photo is the main photo that is displayed alongside your tweets. This should typically be your company logo.

The background picture is displayed behind your main Twitter page. Try and choose an image that complements your brand's identity, and also don't have a fussy image as it can detract from your tweets. You can choose to hire a designer to professionally make an image for your background.

Your bio is also an important part of your profile. Again you will want to write it so that it reflects the identity of your brand while providing readers with information on what you are all about. Try and include some keywords that sum up your business as this will help your search ranking when people are searching for your Twitter page. You will also want include a link to your business website on your Twitter page.
