Anybody who has ever felt the need to go on a diet understands how critical it is to be able to maintain control of the food you eat. It would be extremely hard to concentrate on a diet if you are experiencing hunger pangs. This is most likely the most wide spread cause for failure to maintain a diet or forego it altogether. That's why we're going to focus on some ways to curb your appetite so that you can eat sensibly without feeling hunger pangs all day long.

One way to make up for the bulk of food is to spice up the food that you do eat. There are quite a few spices and seasonings that will result in a feeling of satisfaction. Unfortunately this does not mean salt; the one spice that can actually cause you to eat excessively. There are so many optional seasonings that you can use, like peppers, oregano, garlic along with the spices that are often used in Asian recipes; like mustard, coriander and ginger. When you eat bland food, you may be eating more to feel filled up. Food, which is well spiced, however, will make you happy with less substance.

If you want to keep your appetite under control, don't deprive yourself of the foods you love the most. This includes even the most fattening of foods. The trick is to only eat your weakness foods every now and then, and limiting your servings. Just taking them away won't let you last long in the diet. Lots of people struggle with maintaining a balance between eating too much and not enough.

Allow yourself to indulge in your favorite foods once in a while, but don't overdo it. Your diet will be much easier to maintain if you don't deprive yourself of everything good.

Our plates are so large sometimes that we feel the need to fill it up, which can present a big problem when we are dieting. That's why simply using smaller plates or bowls for your meals can be a way to eat less without feeling deprived.

It's easy to fall into the trap of having second helpings when it's available. Make sure you are careful of the portions you eat at restaurants, since they tend to be larger than needed. With fast food, you need to stick to the smallest portion and avoid them trying to convince you to go up another size for a small amount. If you are sitting down to a nice meal out, don't be afraid to cut your portion in half to be ready to put in a to-go box. We don't need the larger portions that are served, but it's become an accepted practice and has contributed to obesity in our country. While it's important to limit the number of calories you consume if you want to lose weight, it's also important to curb your appetite so you don't feel like you're starving.
