Types of Italian Food

Commonly, when we hear there is spaghetti for dinner we will be expecting a red tomato sauce with meat and seasonings poured over long thin spaghetti. Spaghetti is actually a type of pasta. It is commonly the main course in American homes, but in traditional Italian homes, it would be the first course, with the main course to follow. Traditional types of Italian food and how they are served is a little different than the Americanized version of Italian food.

Here are some types of Italian food and what part of the meal it is traditionally a part of:

• Antipasto-appetizers that can be served either hot or cold
• Primo (the first course)-pasta with sauce, risotto, polenta
• Secondo (the second course/main course)-fish, beef, chicken, veal, wild game
• Contorno (side dish)-salad, vegetables, soup
• Doce-deserts like cakes, cookies, or ice cream

Seasonings that give Italian food its flavor include oregano, garlic, thyme, sweet basil, bay leaves, and Italian seasoning blends. The following are types of pasta:

• Camanelle-bell shaped pasta with frilly edges
• Casarecce-pasta shaped in an “s”
• Cavetelli-short solid lengths of pasta
• Conchiglie-pasta in the shape of shells
• Conchiglioni-pasta shells large enough to stuff
• Farfalle-butterfly or bow tie shaped pasta
• Flori-pasta shaped like a flower
• Fusilli-pasta with a two or three edged spiral
• Radiatore-radiator shaped pasta
• Rotelle-pasta shaped like a wagon wheel
• Rotini-tightly wound two or three edged spiral pasta

• Bucatini-hollow spaghetti
• Cellentani-pasta shaped like a corkscrew
• Manacotti-large tubes of pasta that can be stuffed
• Mostachioli-smooth small pasta tubes
• Penne-medium length pasta tubes cut at angles
• Penne rigate-penne with ridges
• Rigatoni-large short ridged pasta tube
• Ziti-narrow long pasta tubes


• Angel hair-very thin spaghetti
• Fettuccine-ribbon pasta about 6.5 ml wide
• Lasagna-very wide pasta often with fluted edge
• Linguine-flattened spaghetti
• Spaghetti-long round rod shaped pasta
• Vermicelli-thick spaghetti


• Acini di pepe-bead shaped pasta
• Alphabeghetti-pasta in shapes of the alphabets
• Couscous-grain shaped pasta
• Orzo-rice shaped pasta

Pastas can also be stuffed and sealed like ravioli and tortellini.

Popular Italian dishes include lasagna, eggplant Parmesan, seafood Alfredo, shrimp primavera, linguine alla marinara, fettuccini Alfredo, and of course…spaghetti and meatballs. Italian food is often served with wine, garlic bread, and salad. Italian desserts include cheesecake, chocolate gelato, zeppoli, and tiramisu.
