A torque limiter in a machine can be compared to a fuse in electrical system. It functions just like a fuse in protecting the machineries from over load or from a crash. Torques limiter allows machines to shut down by allowing rotating energy dissipate without allowing it to damage the machine. In other words one can say a torque limited set a torque to the pre set limits and protect the machine from damaging thereby enhancing the life of the system. Due to this function torque limiter is always posited near the area of to the source of jam. It is placed in such a way that system inertia and torque to get quickly disconnected so that no harm will be done to the system. A mechanical torque is a better protector to the system with high rotational speed than an electronic device to protect the system from crash.
Selection of torque limiter: Torque limiter works as a fuse by disengaging the clutch in the machineries. One thing is sure here, that torque selection depends upon the accuracy level with which one wants to disengage the clutch. Therefore the torque limit can be calculated depending upon the RPM of a motor, or if torque is identified with a weak link in the breaking shafts, chains, or speed reducers, the torque of the clutch should be set below the level of torque necessary to damage the component. If the machinery is set or the processing of the bottles or cans or boxes then the torque level should be set in such a way that it should minimize the damage of the products. Pre decided reset style is necessary to set the torque so that damage can be minimized. When the clutch type and set torque is decided then the clutch selection can be narrowed down. Usually a prox plate is used in actuating mechanism to provide shut off signal when over load occurs.
There are two different torque limiters one is Mechanical torque limiter and another is Pneumatic torque limiter.
Mechanical Torque limiter: In mechanical torque limiter it is designed to produce one exact detent position. In mechanical torque limiters, the torques are designed in the form of the spring loaded clutches to provide accurate protections than the shear pins or slip clutches. Mechanical torques is manually adjusted and it provides consistency in the operation of the machineries properly.
Application of mechanical torques: Types of torques are different depending upon the type of the industry. Mechanical torques are prominent in the industries such as packaging industries, bottling industries, filling and capping mechanism, Indexing type labeling, waste water drag conveyers and Auxiliary pumps.
Pneumatic torque limiter: It is more precise than the mechanical torque limiter. Pneumatic clutches can run faster and offer more flexibility than mechanical torque limiters.
Application of Pneumatic torque limiters: Paper converting equipment, high speed processing equipment, food processing equipment, high speed packaging equipment.
Summary: Torque limiter is like brakes or fuses which will save the machines from getting damaged. Various types of torque limiters are available depending upon the industry in which they are required.
