They must be niche relevant and be of good quality. If you are a dog trainer and you sell dog training resources and you have health food sites linking to your site, it will do no good for you. The sites must be related to your niche and of have quality content on their site.
The search engines also look at the online presence the site has and their page rank. If you have a high ranking site linking back to your site it looks great for you. However, you should have a mixture of high, medium and low ranking sites to your site. That is more legitimate.
• Keyword usage and placement
Although keywords are not the only contributor to your page rank, it is still important to maintain the keyword usage and placement on your site. Your content is what Google and the search engines index and if there are not keywords in your content, you will be declared non relevant to your niche. That in turn will give you a low page rank.
Your main keywords should be used in your URL / domain name, your title pages, your website title and subtitle, your article titles and your meta description. Each of these areas should have your main keywords in them, so the search engines know your site content is relevant to your niche.
• Submit your site to online directories
I have stated before that it is important to submit your website link to online website directories. Having your site submitted to these sites will give you a higher ranking with the search engines.
Don'ts of legitimate SEO
• Be aware of irrelevant links
Don't allow irrelevant sites to link to your site. The search engines only like to see relevant sites that are linked together, and that's what makes the site rise in the page rank. If there are irrelevant sites linked to your site, they will lower your page rank.
• Irrelevant keywords
Irrelevant keywords will definitely lower your page rank. Google and other search engines hate to see keywords that have nothing to do with your niche. That is especially for your Meta data. It's important to keep your keywords throughout your site relevant to your niche at all times.
• Over use keywords
Do not overuse your keywords where it diminishes the quality of your content. Your content must remain of good quality. If you overuse your keywords the search engines will think you are trying to manipulate the page ranking process. You should stay between 1.5 % and 3% to stay within the search engine's criteria.
• Creating link farms
People used to build multiple doorway sites just for the purpose of having multiple links directing to their sites. That is not the way to build your page rank.
These search engines have caught on to these tactics and will definitely drop you off of their listings if they find you doing it.
