Tips for maintaining your Vacuum Packaging Machines

By: Paul Newton

Vacuum packaging machines are the best way to keep your food fresh and healthy. A vacuum packaging machine helps in preserving the nutritional value and natural flavour of the food. It is because a vacuum sealer eliminates oxygen while preserving the food. Removal of oxygen eliminates freezer burns and bacterial growth, making the food healthier and tastier.

Witnessing the importance of a vacuum packaging machine, it is very important that you take proper care of your machine. Vacuum packaging machines require minimal maintenance. However, you should keep the machine as clean as possible as this will prolong its life.

Here are some tips that will help you maintain your vacuum packaging machine:

 Always clean the machine after your work is over.
 Always unplug and switch off the machine before cleaning.
 Clean the machine with a damp cloth. Make sure that the area around the seals, both top and bottom is scrupulously clean. It is because if the seals have become wet or are otherwise contaminated, they will not seal the food items properly. In such a case, you should remove the seals by gently pulling them out, be careful not to damage them. Wipe the seals with a clean cloth.

The area around the vacuum bag needs to be sealed in order to create a vacuum. This is done by using foam rubber sealing strips on the bottom of the machine and on the lid. When the strips are new, they make a perfect seal, but after a year or two of use, the seal becomes less effective. Thus, in order to maintain the efficiency of your machine, you must replace the seals after 12-48 months depending on how much you use the machine and what you pack.

Maintaining and checking the liquid trap is also very essential. It is done to make sure that no liquid has found its way in or else the machine will not function properly. You can wash the liquid trap and use it after drying it thoroughly with kitchen roll. If the liquid trap needs to be replaced, make sure that you re-fit it properly by pressing it firmly into place. This is essential to ensure a proper vacuum seal.

In order to ensure that your vacuum packaging machine seals the bags without sticking to it, you will have to ensure that the heating element is covered by a non-stick strip which is usually made of Teflon. This strip usually lasts for a couple of years. However, you must keep a check and replace it as soon as it gets spoil.

Last but not the least, you must prevent liquid from filling the liquid trap so that it does not find its way into the motor and destroys it.

If you keep the above mentioned tips in mind, your vacuum packaging machine will not only function effectively, but also last longer.
