Things To Consider While Choosing A Garage Door

By: John Dilon

I am sure that you don't go around buying a garage door everyday - it is a huge investment that will last you for years. While a good garage door can enhance the look of your house and make your life more comfortable, a poorly chosen one will leave you with regret for a long time to come, and you will probably end up spending double the amount in getting it replaced.

For anyone looking to buy a new garage door, or replace an older one, the choices available in the market can be rather overwhelming. Indeed, there are so many materials, styles, brands and models vying for attention. So how do you go about choosing a garage door that is the best fit for your needs? Weighing these factors will help you make the right choice.

Style: Roller, sectional, up-and-over, side-hinged, sliding-and folding, round-the-corner - there are so many types of garage doors to cater to every need. A professional garage door manufacturer will discuss your requirements and suggest which one will be best suited depending upon frequency of usage, budget, size of the garage, overhead space, size and make of your vehicle/s, personal preferences and etc.

Materials: When it comes to garage door materials, you can toy with the ideas of steel, aluminum, fiberglass and wood. Wooden garage doors command a premium price because they are more resilient and prettier to look at. They also leave room for custom designing, but at the same time, demand regular maintenance. Steel garage doors are the most economical and come in a wide array or textures, finishes, textures and colors, but they tend to rust over time. Aluminum garage doors may not be as sturdy as steel doors, but they are ideal for hot and humid climates. They are rust-proof, lightweight, stylish and require minimal maintenance. Fiberglass garage doors are relatively new to the market and they pack in the maximum punch when it comes to durability. They generally cost more than aluminum or steel variants but a little less than wood.

Garage door openers: Manually operated garage doors are slowly going the way of the dinosaur because they are cumbersome and not very safe if you have children around. Installing a garage door opener can allow you to access your garage door remotely, without having to get out of the car. Now, there are primarily three types of garage door openers - chain drive, belt drive and screw drive. Each has its own pros and cons. While belt-drive garage door openers are the most expensive, they are less noisy and require minimal maintenance. Chain-drive openers , on the other hand, are the most economical but since they make considerable noise while opening and closing, you probably wouldn't want them if your bedroom or office is adjacent to the garage. Screw-drive garage door openers are by far the most popular because they are not very expensive, have fewer movable parts, aren't difficult to maintain and don't make as much noise. With either of these, you can opt for extra features such as speed, motor, safety and vacation settings.

Special features: If you are using your garage as an extension of your living space (office, children's play room and etc.), you might want to choose a garage door that offers proper insulation and weather proofing. A double-layer garage door with an extra polystyrene layer over galvanized steel may be a good choice. At the same time, if you wish to enhance the security of your garage and make it soundproof, you may opt for a triple-layer garage door.

Aesthetics: The right garage door can enhance the look of your house while any other will just look like an eye-sore. A period-style timber garage door may look breathtaking on its own but does it really fit in with the rest of your exteriors? Give due thought to the design, material and color by visualizing it against the backdrop of your house. A good idea would be to choose a door that blends in naturally with the rest of your exteriors.
