The World Wide Web of Dating

By: Jayde Johanssen

The idea of finding someone to connect with perfectly is a bit of a scary thought. The world is full of so many people with a variety of personalities, a reality that is both encouraging and overwhelming at the same time.
The amount of people that individuals meet everyday means that there is a higher chance that they will meet someone compatible, but that is not a guarantee due to the diversity of the world's population. For people who tend to keep to themselves, the prospect of finding someone that they click with perfectly is even more intimidating and difficult.
The traditional settings where people go to seek out romance are actually the furthest thing from romantic. Clubs and bars attract large groups of people dressed in their best, but the ususal blaring music and flow of alcohol does not exactly facilitate people getting to know one another on a very deep level. Many people do not even like stepping foot in these establishments, prefering the calm and quiet of their own home, making it that much harder to meet someone and try and work towards a real relationship.
The creation of the internet and its immense growth in popularity has provided people with an alternative route in the dating world. Online dating sites offer people advice, guidance, and a broad selection of potential mates to choose from.
The variety of people that comprise the world's population means that there is a high probability of there really being one special person for each one of us. Sorting through all of the people out there can get tiring, but that is where these dating sites step in. Sites such as eHarmony take on the entire task of finding matches for their clients, not even offering the option of browsing through random profiles of other users.
People must fill out an elaborate personality test in order to be matched up with someone who is compatible. This site even rejects individuals who they cannot find compatible partners for, which is something that speaks to its credibility but is also a bit frightening for individuals who already have a hard time meeting people who they click with.
There are other, less restricted sites that allow users to browse through member profiles and take a look for themselves. The risk that a person runs with this approach is that they can fall victim to going for the pretty face over everything else, much like dating in the real world. People can communicate with one another through the site via chatting and messages.
For people who have a very specific idea of who they are looking for in terms of race, religion, sexual orientation, and even financial status, there are online dating sites tailored to all of these parameters. Finding the exact person that an individual wants is exciting, but it is important that users exercise some caution when navigating through these sites.
At their beginning there was most likely a higher probability that individuals using online dating sites were looking for a serious commitment, but as they grow in popularity an increasing amount of people are utilizing them as a means to entertain numerous dating prospects without any intention of developing a serious relationship.
This unfortunate reality just means that people should remain a little cautious.
