The History of R.M.Williams, and authentic Australian Legend

By: JohnJones

Some 8 decades ago, Reginal Murray ‘R.M.’ Williams began to make bush saddlery and boots while out in South Australia's remote Gammon Ranges. Here R.M. first met "Dollar Mick" Smith, a saddler, and after much trial and error, R.M fashioned his first pair of stockman's riding boots.
Since these early beginnings, the company has developed a world-wide reputation as a quality maker of boots and accessories, with a strong belief in quality, durability and practicality.
Back in 1932, the company's original factory and workshop was R.M.'s father's home at 5 Percy Street, Prospect, South Australia, from where an internationally iconic clothing brand was born.
R.M. started production out in an iron shed out the back of the property upon his return from working with his mentor, the aforementioned ‘Dollar Mick’. A capable and self taught saddler, Dollar Mick passed on his skills to the young R.M. and over the following years R.M. developed and diversified his business into bush saddlry, equipment and the most notably the company's trademark moleskins jeans that are as popular today as they were then.
It’s hard to believe that what started out as practical ‘work wear’ became the R.M.Williams of today, but it is still based on the key principle of quality, now just as it was then.
R.M Williams is at the forefront of Australian style and is world renowned for clothing, accessories and, most importantly of all, handcrafted boots. R.M.Williams’ ranges are constantly evolving to keep pace with current and seasonal trends while maintaining their commitment to quality workmanship, comfort and style.
R.M came to this country when travellers, who had done time in the bush came back wearing it, and then started importing them for personal use, because they couldn’t get such quality and fit from local shops. Gradually this developed, and RM became available in UK shops, and the brand has grown into a rare example of something Australian that we actually love in the UK!
