The Different Varieties of Wigs

By: PeterJohnson

Wigs have been an integral part of human history. In current times, the only purpose of wig is to cover bald features. However, in the past, wigs were used for a variety of purposes. Wearing a wig was once considered to be the sign of nobility, while at other times it was crucial to wear a wig in order to avoid a louse infestation. The continuous need for wigs meant that wig development never ceased and wig manufacturers kept experimenting with various materials and designs in order to perfect the modern wigs; so well-designed and so realistic, it is almost impossible to spot someone wearing a wig or toupee.

In order to purchase a wig, one must first decide upon which variety of wig suits their needs, requirements and budget. Wigs are available in wide range of materials that are usually responsible for determining the cost. The most common varieties of wigs include: synthetic, human hair, lace, and monofilament.

Synthetic wigs are perhaps the cheapest option of the lot. Due to its low cost, most wigs tend to be made out of synthetic fibres. While being processed, synthetic fibres can be treated to replicate the look and feel of genuine human hair. However, no matter how much it is processed, synthetic fibres fail to capture the essence of human hair wigs. On the other hand, synthetic fibres are light and very easy to maintain, which makes synthetic wigs ideal for every day usage.

As far as the look and feel of human hair is concerned, no synthetic or artificial fibre can replicate it. Hence, it is obvious that for those looking for a natural look, only human hair wigs will suffice. The wig manufacturing industry tends to use two kinds of human hair: hair imported from Asia and hair imported from Europe. Asian hair wigs are the most commonly available wigs and are the cheaper option. The rarity and high quality of European hair wigs makes them more likely to cause a dent in the wallet. Whether Asian or European, human hair is always treated and processed before being used to make wigs. However, neither can match the quality of virgin hair wigs, i.e. hair that has never been coloured or treated. Virgin hair wigs can command some of the steepest prices in the market.

Human hair wigs are more durable than synthetic wigs which means they can last much longer. They are also more expensive than the synthetic variety. Many people shy away from human hair wigs due to the maintenance involved to keep them clean. However, the maintenance steps required for human hair wigs are no different from that of regular human hair.

Lace wigs, whether lace front or full lace front, are often composed of human hair; very rarely will a lace wig manufacturer use extremely high-quality synthetic fibres. The versatility of lace wigs makes them very expensive and beyond the financial reach of most individuals. However, even lace wigs fail before the crème-de-la-crème of the wig world, the monofilament wig. These wigs consist of a special base that gives the optical illusion of the hair actually growing from the scalp. The high-quality of monofilament wigs have made it very popular among makeup and visual effect artists in the movie industry.
