The Difference between Interior Decorator and Interior Designer

By: Sunil Punjabi

These professionals, who take care of the interior décor of buildings, insist that there are subtle differences between the jobs handled by each. Both an interior decorator and an interior designer beautify home interiors. That is why they appear to be doing similar jobs. Of course, the similarity is so much that the dividing line between the two is often blurred. But the main difference is that the job handled by an interior decorator is cosmetic to the core. The technicians of an interior decoration company help in deciding the color scheme of a room, help in choosing matching furniture or lampshades, and also buy and get stitched matching curtains and cushions where necessary.

Depending upon whether he is doing this cosmetic job for a home or office or hospital or restaurant, there may be minor variations in the extent of the work handled by an interior decorator. But his work will not go deeper than that and will not intrude into basic planning. But the work handled by an interior designer is more basic and deeper. It is close to what is done by the architect himself.

The work handled by an interior designer will include planning the layout of the entire building, including that of places like the staircase, bathroom, and kitchen. He and his men will work with the architect in the early stages of the construction itself, and will be involved in many aspects of the building like its plumbing, ventilation, lighting, and energy efficiency. An interior designer will question the client about his hobbies or lifestyle preferences to take a decision on some of these aspects. He may also suggest some changes to the architect, based upon what he has unearthed about the client.

Once everything that is to do with designing the interior of a building is fully taken care of, an interior designer may add to his job, the work of beautifying the house interior also. He may do the color scheme, and do the job of buying the furniture, curtains, wall decorations, lamps, lights etc. That is where the jobs of an interior designer and interior decorator overlap because these are the jobs done by an interior decorator also. But an interior designing company will not do these decoration jobs by itself, though they may take up these jobs together with the basic designing job.
