The Advantages and Disadvantages of a Washer Dryer Combo

By: Leanne Trine

Many people are discovering the benefits of using a washer dryer combo machine at home. They take up a lot less room than separate washer and dryer machines and so are ideally suited in smaller spaces. With these machines the washing and drying are all done in the same machine.
A combination appliance does the same job as two machines. This can be very convenient and save a lot of time as dirty clothes can be put into the machine and just a short time later you remove fresh, dry, clean clothes.
Washer and dryer combo machines are very popular in the Far East and Europe where space is a premium and therefore apartments and living areas are much smaller. Compact laundry appliances were designed to fit into these small spaces.
Some washer dryer machines are also portable which gives more choice as to their placement within the kitchen or laundry. It was often believed that the combination unit was more fragile than their separate cousins. However, this has been found not to be true.
There are a couple of disadvantages though to these machines that should be considered. They are often of the non vented type when it comes to drying and so the tray which collects the water from the condensation process will need to be emptied on a regular basis. They are often a little more expensive than the separate appliances. The drying part of the cycle tends to take longer to complete than with a separate dryer unit. The result can also be a slight reduction in efficiency and, therefore, costing a little more to run.
Standard combo models machines in two main sizes which are 24 inches or 27 inches wide. These dimensions translate to a load of somewhere between 11 to 22 pounds of clothes.
Setting up a combination appliance is usually a straight forward process that requires access to a faucet for its water supply and drainage. If you have access to a ventilation point in an outside wall then it is possible to get a vented model. However, most models do not require this as they are ventless and are, therefore, even easier to set up.
Although combo appliances have a few disadvantages over their separate counterparts, the advantage of being able to slot into a small place often far outweighs them. This is making them a really popular choice and a great alternative.
