Tennis is the new fashion trend

By: Shem Ouma

Fashion knows no bounds. So from lifestyle to sports, haute couture has made an indelible mark in the way people dress. Tennis is no exception to this. With players gaining the celebrity status, fashion houses are coming up with innovative ideas to set a fashion trend in the realm of sports too. Fashion speaks itself. The celebrity players like Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, and Ana Ivanovik have glamorized the way players dress. They always make style statements with their exclusively designed tennis outfits. Here are some of the female tennis players who have set a trend and given tennis a personal touch.

Williams Sisters' quirky outfits

Venus and Serena Williams brought about an era of outlandish outfits that demanded attention on the court. They blended the tradition with their quirky and embellished outfits. Their out of the box fashion sense accentuated their recognition. Sticking to the customary whites they still found a way, through their revealing cuts and ornate designs.

Sharakova-esque

Maria Sharapova and Anna Kournikova are the two tennis players who metamorphosed the concept of tennis outfit from grim athlete wear to skimpy and outrageous fashion wear. They became as famous for their on-court fashion sense as they were for their stellar performances. While Sharapova designed all her uniforms adding menswear elements and Swarovski crystals, Kournikova favored short, tight, midriff baring outfits. They have set a trend which can very well be termed as Sharakova-esque.

Ivanovik and Wozniacki way

Brand endorsements become a symbol of a player's status and have a huge impact on their clothing. Ana Ivanovik regularly displays colorful range of outfits by Adidas and Caroline Wozniacki is the latest muse for Stella McCartney's line for the brand. They have made their niche into brand endorsements and given the brands their personal vivacious touch as well.

These are the ladies who have shed their inhibitions and expressed their inner desires to the world. They are not only style icons but are worshipped as demigods as they always break grounds on the tennis court too.

Apart from these players personifying tennis fashion, there are several other factors which have equally fuelled the boom in this phenomenon. Some of them are big brands with colossal budget and unique marketing strategies. They carry research and development in this field and collaborate with designers to bring out high-end tennis apparels.

Some other recent trends and events have all contributed to elevating tennis from a sport to a glamorous status. We have tried to dissect and digest three such factors below:

Brands launching tennis fashion lines

Tennis has now been a witness to several fashion weeks dedicated to it. Brands are playing with the idea of launching fashion collection exclusively for tennis. Recently Fila unveiled tennis lines designed by Ginny Hilfiger. Brands are sponsoring players on the WTA tour where they have to wear the new lines of outfits which are increasingly becoming the in-thing.

Global Fashion Awards

World Global Style Network (WGSN) organizes Global Fashion Awards where there is a special sports and active wear category which recognizes the exquisite work of fashion in sportswear. This has created a platform for designers to work upon sports apparel. The couturiers feel more motivated now and have shown quite an enthusiasm in their craft.

High-end tennis fashion accessories

Tennis tour bags, tennis necklace, tennis bracelets, visors and wristbands are some of the accessories which add to the style quotient of the tennis fashionistas. The players can be spotted carrying designer bags to and from the court with oomph. Wristbands and bracelets both meant for wrists have something of their own to lend to the players. Visors also are not lagging behind from getting funkier and classier. Tennis necklace is something which has seeped into the sport of late from the mainstream fashion world. They are seen being worn by tennis divas such as Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams with as much spark in their eyes as in the necklaces.

An era has heralded where sports and fashion have intertwined with each other. Certainly tennis has become a fashion genre in itself.
