According to a survey 20 percent of teens will experience teen depression before they reach adulthood, 10 to 15 percent of teenagers have some symptoms of teen depression and 5 percent of teens are suffering from major depression. Sometimes drug and alcohol use can lead to depression; but more frequently, teens that are depressed seek out alcohol and other drugs to avoid dealing with their depression and how it makes them feel. Often teenagers react to the pain of depression by getting into trouble: trouble with alcohol, drugs, or sex; trouble with school or bad grades; problems with family or friends.
