Choosing great food from a trusted caterer is just one part of having your event, party, or get together catered. Once you have the menu and the caterer chosen, there are other food related tasks to be taken care of. To have a successful catered event, don’t assume that the caterer will be handling everything. Once you have your list of tasks, contact your caterer. Communicating with your caterer not only will assure a successful catered event, it can save time and money. Some of the things needed may be included in the cost of catering or may be added for an affordable fee. It may be worth the extra cost to assure everything goes smoothly.

There will need to be a table or tables to have the food served from. Accommodations will need to be made to keep cold food cold and hot food hot. There should be adequate room to accommodate the flow of guests as they get their food from the buffet. If guests are to be served at their tables, there needs to be a place to set up the food and prepare the plates. If the catering service doesn’t provide table coverings, tables, and chairs the host will have to rent or borrow those things and arrange for set up.

All catering begins with the basics, which is the food. The food can be delivered or picked up at the restaurant. When picking up food at the restaurant be sure you are educated on proper food storing and serving to prevent your guests getting food poisoning. If the food need to be kept hot or cold it is often best if the caterer assures that will happen. It is worth the cost of having them deliver and serve the food so that food safety guidelines are followed.

If the catering services don’t include plates, utensils, and napkins, be sure you estimate what will be needed and the costs. Compare it to the cost (if offered) of having the catering service provide the items. If you are picking up the food and serving it yourself, make sure that you have one or two serving utensils per dish. Depending on the food that will be catered and the formality of the event, you may need to assign or hire people to serve food and make sure all platters and dishes are replenished as needed. The food can be set up buffet style or guests can be seated at tables and served.
