To say that you need to save is already a given, but you also donít want to compromise on quality. The question now is this: can you actually manage to save without endangering your bank account? If youíre resourceful and you do your homework well, the answer to that is definitely a resounding yes.
You know youíre not rich, of course. You did not, however, expect that your bank account would be so vertically challenged Ė at least it didnít appear that way before you made your withdrawal. Maybe itís your eternal optimism working, but it surely felt like a few thousand dollars was quite a handful of money saved up. But when you have to convert it to tangible expenses needed for your home renovation project, youíre compelled to admit that your budgeting skills will be sorely tested.
Like a lot of major challenges, though, it started out seemingly simple enough.
One evening, after a particularly long day in the office, you came home to realize just how drab and sad your apartment looked. Youíve lived there for almost four years already, but somehow before that fateful night it didnít sink in that the atmosphere was far from welcoming. The living room highlighted a worn out couch; the kitchen was outdated; the paint on the walls was peeling; and the bedroom resembled a warehouse. Something clearly had to be done, and you decided an apartment makeover was definitely in order.
That was your goal. The reality, however, when you actually get around to it, was quite a different story. While it is true that your salary as an accounting clerk is respectable Ė and it helped that youíre not yet married and donít have a baby to support Ė it should also be taken note of that itís far from impressive. Even for a single professional like you, it seems thereís an endless list of things to pay for. Thereís the mortgage, the monthly utilities, even the occasional shopping splurge.
Add it all up and you get a decent savings in the bank account Ė but not much else. To say that you need to save is already a given, but you also donít want to compromise on quality. The question now is this: can you actually manage to save without endangering your bank account? If youíre resourceful and you do your homework well, the answer to that is definitely a resounding yes. You likely wonít be able to do so very quickly Ė like in a snap of your fingers Ė but it also wonít take you forever. Perhaps you can free up a weekend and hit the Internet to narrow down your options.
Take for instance your bed. Thereís a very good reason you want to replace your stuffy twin size bed with a nice bed sizes double complimented by, say, a four poster queen size bed frame. Now, if you go through the mainstream bedding stores in Calgary, the prices would likely give your money a good stretch Ė one that you may not feel comfortable with. However, who says you have to hit the malls to make a good purchase? If you know where to look, a quality factory direct mattress would definitely prove to be a steal.
In home renovation as in life, itís not really how much money you have, but how you use it. The key is to utilize your available resources and hit your remodeling project Ė without overspending.
