Sketchup App

Google SketchUp is a 3D-modeling app that allows you to design anything from a home addition to an entire neighborhood. SketchUp is simple and easy to learn, and you can use the app for fun or to plan building projects. The application’s three-dimensional modeling tools are accessible for laymen and professionals alike.

Google SketchUp is an excellent application for designing do-it-yourself projects ranging from building a bookshelf to designing a kitchen renovation or a house. You can use the app for creating plans for building a shed, deck or other construction project.

The app promises the ability to design with dimensional accuracy. You can even add details like textures and glass to your models. SketchUp can handle designs on a grander scale as well — you can design models of whole neighborhoods or space ships. You’ll discover few limits — other than the limits of your own creativity — while using SketchUp.

What’s more, Google SketchUp allows you to put your model creations in Google Earth and post your designs to the 3D Warehouse to share them with other people online. You can print hard copies of your designs, too. This application is fast, allowing you to create mock-ups and designs quickly and easily.

Perhaps best of all, however, is that you can download SketchUp for free. The system requirements include Windows 2000 or better and 128MB of RAM minimum or ideally at least 512MB.

If you’re a professional designer, architect or builder — or if you just want a superior 3D-modeling experience — you can try SketchUp Pro with LayOut. This more sophisticated version allows you to create professional-quality design documents, generate reports and PDFs, and transfer files to and from other software. There are several versions of SketchUp Pro, the latest labeled version 8.

Unlike SketchUp, however, the Pro version isn’t free, costing $495. Because the Pro version is designed for professionals, most buyers will find that the application is well worth the money. You’ll enjoy special functions like animation and organic terrain modeling. The higher-end 3D modeling app is still cheaper than AutoCAD, for example.

Google SketchUp Pro is still easy to use and allows designers to share ideas, project details and decision-making with clients and colleagues. The LayOut feature is a great tool for professionals, and offers 2D presentation and documentation functions, combining your 3D models with 2D drawings and text. LayOut is especially useful for creating construction drawings like blueprints, digital presentations and other design documents.

Aside from the special features of the Pro version, the free SketchUp app allows you to try your hand at 3D modeling to create a customized furniture piece or redecorate your house. The Google 3D Warehouse not only lets you share your designs, but it also allows you to view other people’s models to snag some great ideas. Google also offers numerous training videos and tutorials, along with a “help center.”

But you can get started with Google SketchUp by viewing just a few short tutorials. SketchUp’s prebuilt components and simple Materials panel makes the app particularly accessible for people who don’t know a thing about architecture, design or modeling.
