Simple Tips to Clean Your Carpet without Shelling Big Bucks

By: Jerry Marshal

Your carpet is the most susceptible part of your home that is prone to dirt accumulating dirt. Regularly running a vacuum is not enough to clean the carpet inside out. What you need is a little extra. If your carpet is heavily spoiled, regular spot cleaning is not sufficient; here you will need to shampoo your carpet. Many people refrain from hiring a professional carpet cleaner fearing the exorbitant costs associated. There are several handy tips that you can use to clean your carpets without shelling out big bucks.

There are two major benefits of using home ingredients for cleaning carpet. First, you will save big money and secondly, you will keep your home healthier by not using the noxious chemical based cleaning agent.

Removing liquid stains

Spilled liquid can lead to stubborn stains that are virtually impossible to remove unless you seek assistance from a professional. However, taking prompt action can go a long way in removing the stain before it seeps through the carpet. First, remove the excess moisture using a mop or a rag. Remember that carpet fiber absorbs moisture faster leading to mildew growth so you need to act quickly. Cornstarch is a common ingredient to be found around your kitchen; sprinkle the starch over the spill and leave it for 30 minutes to absorb the moisture. This is a sure fire way to prevent the carpet from staining. Other than that, you can also remove stains using a damp cloth drizzled with a regular cleaning detergent. Blot the cloth on the stain until the stain is loosened, then use a clean damp cloth to remove the excess detergent.

Spot stains

Removing spot stains can be a harrowing experience. Hiding a stain under the furniture is not going to help you; what you need to do is to remove the stain. Start by sweeping or vacuuming the surface to remove dirt particles. Blot away the excess moisture using an absorbent paper towel. Sop up as much moisture as you can, but do not commit the mistake of rubbing or scrubbing the spot, as the stain will spread. For pet stains, you can sprinkle the area with solution of either baking soda or vinegar. Use just enough water to make a thick paste and work the paste over the spoiled area using a rag; let the solution saturate deep into the carpet. Once done, remove excess residue using a damp cloth. Common coffee, chocolate and cola stains can also be removed using vinegar.

If your child has poured tomato ketchup over the carpet, do not get rattled. Remember, time is of essence here and you need to act quickly. First, dab away the sauce and use hydrogen peroxide solutions over the stain. Allow the solution to bubble. Once it does, wipe clean the stain using a damp cloth.

Deodorization

Often, you must have noted a pungent odour emitting from your carpet, inspite of your regular and stringent cleaning. Just regular cleaning will not do here; you also need to deodorize your carpet on a regular basis. Baking soda can be a boon to have when it comes to carpet cleaning. Sprinkle your carpet with light coating of the baking soda; allow it to sit for some time before vacuuming away the excess. Baking soda will not only absorb excess moisture, but also act as a natural deodorizer.
