Silicone Rubber & its Uses

By: Ravi Raj

The silicones are a group of elastomeric materials made from silicone, oxygen, hydrogen and carbon. As a group, the silicones have poor tensile strength, tear resistance and abrasion resistance. Special compounds have beer made which have exceptional heat and compression set resistance. Silicones possess excellent resistance to temperature extremes, Flexibility below - 175 degrees F (- 114 degrees C) has been demonstrated. The maximum temperature at which silicones are recommended for continuous service in dry air is 450 degrees F (232 degrees C). Silicone rubber is generally non-reactive, stable, and resistant to extreme environments and temperatures from -55 C to +300 C while still maintaining its useful properties. Due to these properties and its ease of manufacturing and shaping, silicone rubber can be found in a wide variety of products, including: automotive applications; cooking, baking, and food storage products; apparel such as undergarments, sportswear, and footwear; electronics; media devices and implants; and in home repair and hardware with products such as silicone sealants. Silicone's retention of properties at these high temperatures is superior to other elastic materials, Silicone compounds are not normally recommended for dynamic sealing applications due to relatively low strength and high coefficient of friction.

During manufacture, heat may be required to vulcanize (set or cure) the silicone into its rubber-like form. This is normally carried out in a two stage process at the point of manufacture into the desired shape, and then in a prolonged post-cure process. It can also be injection molded.

An O-ring, also known as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical qasket in the shape of a torus; it is a loop of elastomer with a disc-shaped cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface. Material which is for Silicone O-Rings are: - Gold foil, Gasket material, viton, PTFE and Silicone Sheet Material. The O-Rings are available in 4 sizes: - size 0, size 1, size 2, size 3 with correspond to the diameter of the cross section of the O-Ring. With in these groups the O-Rings are classified according to their insider diameter. In addition O-Ring kits of the most popular sizes of O-rings are available in both Buna & Viton.

Silicone rubber keypads (also known as Elastomeric Keypads) are used extensively in both consumer and industrial electronic products as a low cost and reliable switching solution. Common applications of Silicone rubber keypads include remote controls for TV, Video and HIFI units, Electronic toys and games and industrial control equipment. In recent years, the mobile phone handset manufacturers are the main consumer of Rubber Keypads world wide. The material of Silicone Rubber Keypad is usually stiff in nature. The surface of Keypads can vary from single button convex, to concave and even plane. The Silicone Rubber Keypads are very much suitable for exact print, graphic clarity and ideal thickness of the printing ink.

Silicon rubber sheet can be manufactured in a range of material including Viton, Fluorosilicone rubber, Platinum, Cured Silicone Rubber, Metal dectactable and USP class VI approved. Silicone Rubber Sheet can be supplied in rolls or pieces and used to stamp or waterjet cut Silicone rubber qaskets to custom designs. Good resistant to weather ageing, ozone and chemicals. Low permeability to gas, air and high dielectric strengths. Available in Red/White & Transparent colour for Phamaceutical Industry.
