There's one thing for sure, when it comes to purchasing a kayak you need to take really good care when buying a second hand one. Lets not rule it out, there is a great deal to be had when it comes to buying a second-hand boat.
There are some definite bargains to take advantage of.
Tip 1: Make Sure It Does The Job.
There is no point spending money on a boat that doesn't live up to expectations. Your kayak needs
to hold up against strong currents, hard rocks and rough water.
Tip 2: Make Sure You Test The Boat Out First.
If you are thinking of buying a boat unseen then you should re-consider. At least test the boat on a demo lake or on open water before you buy. This way you will make a better decision and you won't end up buying something which you don't like.
Tip 3: Make Sure You Buy A Boat Made Of High-Quality Material
The advantage of plastic is that it is tough and holds up against most knocks and bashes. Before you purchase it please remember to give the kayak a good check before you set off. Make sure to check the sea, near the cockpit and the front and back of the boat. In addition, make sure that the bolts are well fitted. One thing to be conscious of is the manufacturers guarantee. You want to be able to query and issues related with the boat so a second hand kayak may not have this advantage.
Tip 4: Make Sure You Have The Correct Equipment
You need the right equipment, this means a dry bag, water proofs and of course a paddle. Make sure these are in good working condition before you set off and that you have checked everything over, twice!
Tip 5: Have Fun!
The most important thing is to have fun and enjoy your trip. If you don't want to buy a new or used kayak then hire one and explore the local area / coastline for yourself. Sit on tops are great for this and are fantastic on the sea.
