General Information

Shaken Baby Syndrome is caused by vigorous shaking of an infant or young child by the arms, legs, chest or shoulders. Forceful shaking can result in brain damage leading to mental retardation, speech and learning disabilities, paralysis, seizures, hearing loss and even death. Shaken Impact Syndrome refers to shaking in combination with the head impacting against something.

Death and Injury Statistics

An estimated 50,000 cases occur each year in the United States.
One shaken baby in four dies as a result of this abuse.
80% of perpetrators are male.
60% of victims are male.
25-50% of parents and caretakers are not aware of the effects of shaking a baby.
Retinal hemorrhages are found in 65-95% of patients.

When and Where Injuries and Deaths are Most Likely to Occur

Prevention Tips

Education of all caregivers if they are afraid they might hurt a child:

ThinkFirst:

STOP: Put the child in a safe place and leave the room for a few minutes.

CALM DOWN:

Call a friend or neighbor.
Take ten deep breaths, then take ten more.
Do something for yourself: play music, close your eyes, run the vacuum.
Take the baby for a ride in the stroller or car.
Put the baby in a baby swing.
Put the baby close to your chest and rock or walk the baby.
Offer the baby a pacifier.
Feed baby slowly and burp often.
Make sure baby is dry.
Call a health care provider, medical attention may be required.
