War is discouraged at all costs in different ways by different people. Scientists play a critical role during and before wartime. This shows that they have an obligation to ensure that before the war, they have gathered the relevant information concerning the magnitude of the war in order to save people from severe losses and destructions from their opponents. During and before the World War 1, as revealed by scientists like Albert Eistein, Fritz Haber, and Max Planck; it’s the role of scientists to ensure that they educate their countries on the dangers associated with using lethal weapons against their enemies. Some scientists like Albert contributed either directly or indirectly in the establishment of the atomic bomb which was used in bombing Japan (Nye 120).
Albert played a role in its development where he stated from his special theory of relativity that a small amount of matter could release large amount of energy (Nye 120). He later regretted being involved in the creation of atomic bomb as it resulted in destruction of properties and loss of life. This shows that scientists were obliged to provide their countries with skills and knowledge on how science can be used in restraining fighting rather than in fighting their enemies. Eistein thought that he should participate in providing skills in making atomic bomb but later realized that it caused a lot of destructions in Japan. Till his death he urged scientists to avoid contributing to wars by providing their skills in production of lethal weapons. Despite the fact that Albert Eistein was at first involved in the war he changed his position after the war as a result of the magnitude of the destructions which were made. It should be noted that the skills possessed by scientists should not be used in causing destructions but in bringing development in the whole world.
In the year 1929, Eistein indicated that he would service the war either directly or indirectly. It should be noted that as a result of the knowledge and skills possessed by scientists during this time, they were considered of great help during the war (Nye 120). Eistein got involved in the war by signing a letter to President Franklin authorizing the building up of the bomb. According to these scientists, during the wartime scientists need to provide their countries with information on how to produce more and more dangerous weapons to defeat their enemies like the case of Germany and atomic bomb during the World War 1 (Nye 120). In the year 1944, Eistein wrote to Niels Bohr explaining the problems which could face the whole world after the war. This shows that scientists are obliged to foresee the destructions which could be caused by any war and educate their countries accordingly. It was believed after the war that Eistein contributed heavily to the bombing of Japan.
By the time of World War 2, there were a lot of changes especially in form of the technologies used in fighting machines. According to the advancement of technology and scientific revolution during this period of time, more powerful machine guns were used hence leading to higher casualty rates as compared to the World War 1. Eistein viewed a lot of changes during this time especially in the expansion and improvement of fighting machines (Nye 121). The World War 2 was not like the World War 1 in terms of weapons as more and more scientists had come up with different technologies of developing these weapons. By this period of time, the view of Eistein of developing a mass killing weapon changed and he concentrated on the problems which could be created in future. More and more destructions were made during this period of time hence indicating to him that war was of no use to the lives of may people (Nye 121). It is because of this that he wrote to Niels Bohr in the year 1944 explaining that the destructions which would be caused by the war would be more pronounced than what was the case during the World War 1 (Nye 129). In the year 1954, before he met his death, Eistein summarized his feelings about his role in the creation of the atomic bomb and indicated that the greatest mistake he made in life was his participation to the creation of atomic bomb especially when he signed the letter to President Roosevelt recommending the creation of atomic bomb (Nye 129). The justifications were that Germany was feared to make them and hence it required a country to silence it.
The above statement shows that Eistein later regretted his participation in the creation of atomic bomb. This can be attributed to the destruction that was brought about by the bomb in Japan. Despite the fact that it was feared that Germany would create atomic bombs and hence it was considered as a threat, his signing a letter to President Roosevelt was regrettable (Nye 129). It can be learned from this that Eistein did not think that atomic bomb would lead to a lot of losses and deaths in the whole world. This shows that scientists if they can work together for the benefits of the whole world, production of lethal weapons which are capable of destroying large masses in the world could cease. From a short article that was written in the New York Times in the year 1946, it was indicated that Prof. Albert Eistein had indicated that he was very sure and certain that if President Roosevelt was alive by then, he would have forbidden the bombing of Japan (Nye 129). Because of the destruction of life and properties that were caused by the atomic bomb that was used in bombing Hiroshima by the United States of America, Eistein later indicated that he had lived to condemn the use of atomic bomb against this country. These statements imply that the obligation of scientist during and before wartime is to educate their countries to avoid using weapons which would cause harm to the community or the citizens.
From the case of atomic bomb in Japan, it is clear that, scientists can control their intervention in war in order to save the situation. In this case, if Eistein did not participate in the development of atomic bomb the destructions which were made could not have been made (Nye 134). This shows that scientists have a lot of responsibilities in ensuring that their countries do not get involved in wars. This is because if Eistein had known the destructions which would be brought about by his involvement in the creation of atomic bomb, he could have saved these destructions. The magnitude of destruction whether to properties or human beings is well known to scientists as they know the components used in the creation of these lethal weapons.
The role of scientists trying to avoid usage of lethal weapons during wars is very good because they contribute in saving not only the lives and properties by the future environments. A good case in the way environmental conditions were destroyed in Japan following the Hiroshima atomic bomb where for a long period of time, babies were born with deformities. In the worlds of Eistein after realization of the magnitude of destruction made in Japan, he regretted why he was involved in the creation of the bomb (Nye 134). If scientists would continuously provide reliable information to their countries during wars, mass destructions could not be committed like the case of World War II. During the World War I, scientists thought that their involvement would help in fighting their enemies but they later realized how wrong they were.
The President’s Obama stated goal of a world with zero nuclear weapons could be easily achieved if all scientists work together with a goal of bringing about developments in the whole world rather than destruction. In this case, scientists would make sure that regardless of what they know about sciences like the case of specific theory of relativity of Eistein which resulted to creation of atomic bomb, they should use it in more constructive ways that bring about development (Nye 134). Scientists are heavily regarded as very important in societies because of their provisions of knowledge and skills in the real life situations but they should ensure that they use their knowledge and skills for the better of all.
