Whether you are an owner operator or the CEO of a major corporation, you wonít be in business long before clients and government are demanding proof of your safety records. Why is this so important? What is the benefit? Why does it cost so much? All of these questions may be at the forefront of your mind when considering embarking on the implementation of a safety program. Here are the nuts and bolts of safety and business and why they go hand in hand.
Todayís businesses are a dime a dozen. Itís easy to start a business, but not so easy to keep it going and make it profitable. When a client chooses a company to provide goods and services they need to be assured that the company will still be around to complete the job. One way they do this is by assessing the safety and business practices of the prospective company.
Having sound business practices demonstrates an understanding of short term and long term goals. It lets the clients know that the business is being controlled by people with a plan, ability to visualize the steps needed to complete the plan and an overall understanding as to why the plan is important in the first place.
Having a solid safety program shows clients that the business isnít simply looking to turn a quick profit, but instead is setting itself up for long term growth and sustainability. It demonstrates an understanding that the potential loss and damage sustained by an injury or fatality can place the business in jeopardy, which will have an impact on their ability to complete contracts.
Before taking on a new business, more and more companies are requiring their subcontractor to provide proof of safety programs, certificates of training and confirmation that the business has undergone a recent safety audit. So while this all seems a little daunting, and even a little over the top, it is how big business protect themselves from poor quality subcontractors.
Bringing your own organization up to snuff isnít as difficult as it seems at the start. Paperwork, worker training and follow-up are the basics. As a business owner you must document all your activities (preferably on standard company forms), you must train your workers properly (online training, e-learning training, computer learning courses, classroom safety training, etc.) and you must monitor these activities to ensure they are completed and current.
Protect your company from loss and plan to be a safe and thriving organization. Clients will see this and choose your company over others who are not planning for safety and success. Safety and business go hand in hand, but you still need to take it one step at a time.
