Reasons Why Speakers Should be More Influential

By: Michael Folgers

Most people think that being a speaker is easy and they would be right. However, being just a good speaker is different from being an influential speaker and being the latter can be quite a challenge for a lot of reasons. When you are given the power to encourage people to change the way they think and the way they do things, you need to handle that power wisely.

Such is the responsibility that falls on the shoulders of every speaker. You need not only speak words of wisdom, you also need to have experienced it and be living proof of the change you are trying to invoke in people. You don't just have a message that you convey, you also need to make people understand that message and why they need to listen to it. You need to make people realize why they must make the change and what they need to change in order to be better versions of themselves.

Professional speaking, as mentioned previously looks easy but it is but it can be difficult and challenging, especially if you're doing it right. It's not enough that you can confidently stand in front of a crowd and deliver your prepared speech. You also have to make sure they aren't falling asleep while you drone on and on and that you and they are on the same page. You have to make sure your research is impeccable and so is your speech. You have to make sure that you rehearse everything and that you've got it all down pat by the time your speaking engagement rolls around.

While these are what make professional speaking tedious, there are other things that make it worthwhile, like the travelling and meeting new friends. But the best part about being a public speaker is having the power to initiate change, to influence change. Influence is communicating ideas and making them stick. Public speaking in fact, is the best platform for influence, it is being able to deliver motivation and quality content and be enchanting at the same time.

When you are an influential speaker, you also have the ability to make what is perceived as mundane, interesting. You have the ability to make people feel they are special, which makes them more prone to accept rather than resist change. You also have more passion than anyone else and if anything, having passion can change the world because it is contagious.

Being an influential speaker also means you are more positive about things, no matter how bad they seem. When you meet people and welcome them with a smile, you somehow charge the atmosphere with positive energy and make your crowd more receptive to what you are saying. Speakers who are a bit on the sour side can take a leaf out of your book if they want to succeed as speakers.

When you are an influential speaker you also know how to make other people excited about what you are saying. You have the ability to work a room and energize your audience. It doesn't matter whether you are talking about a lump of coal - what will matter is that you are getting a crowd excited about that lump of coal enough for them to look at it from another perspective, one that is particularly engaging and interesting.

And last but not the least, when you are an influential speaker, you have the power of persuasion. You are able to convince people that there is another way of looking at things and that a fresh perspective may just bring about the change they want to happen in their lives. Persuading people to think differently is a challenge most of the time but when you do it, it seems easy as pie because you are influential.
