Reasons Not to Have a Party at Your House

By: Sarah Carlye

You are in charge of a organizing a corporate event, birthday celebration, or a bachelor or bachelorette party and you may be considering having the party at your house. There may be some advantages, including keeping within a small budget, when you have a party at your house, but there are more reasons not to have a party at your house.

• Space-most homes and apartments don’t have enough room to accommodate a large group comfortably. To avoid limiting the guest list, look for other places to hold the party.

• Wear and tear-no matter how careful people are, drinks and food get spilled and objects accidentally get knocked over. The more guests in the home, the higher the risk something in your home can be accidentally stained or damaged.

• Security-the guest list may only include trusted friends, family, or co-workers, but what about their dates or partners…how well do you know them? We all want to trust others, but sadly not everyone is trustworthy and should know where you live and the valuable items that you have in your home.

• Noise-especially in apartments, the noise level will need to be kept down to avoid bothering neighbors. A couple people laughing is no big deal, but add 10-20 more people having fun, talking, and laughing and the noise level quickly increases. Sound may travel farther than you realize.

• Unruly guests-your co-worker may be the most conservative person you know, but after a few drinks may change faster than a werewolf during a full moon. In a public place people tend to be on better behavior and if not, it is someone else’s responsibility to control them.

• Liability-in the event there is alcohol at the party, you may not be able to monitor everyone’s drinking. A guest may drink more than you noticed and drive when leaving your home. You can be held liable as host or hostess of the party (just like with a lounge or nightclub) if that guest leaves and gets into an accident.

Before having a party at your home, consider the reasons not to have a party in your home, before making a final decision. When looking for somewhere other than your home to host a party in New York, go to to find a lounge or nightclub in New York for your event location.
