You have a new idea for a business and you need funds to improve on the idea you have. You decide to try your hand at getting a grant from one of the federal agencies that give out grants to small businesses that focus on the development of new products and researching how to improve on them. The government agency you will need to tap is the SBA or Small Business Administration and the programs you will need to look through for the grants you need are the SBIR or Small Business Innovation Research program and the STTR or Small Business Technology Transfer program.

Preparing grant proposals for these two programs requires a lot of research, and a lot of hard work to put together a convincing proposal that shows your idea is well worth the money that the government will give you to develop it. When you first put together a grant proposal, you will first need to determine which program best suits the kind of idea for the small business that you have. You will also need to familiarize yourself with the specific requirements that the grant giving body has for such grants.

Before you start writing the grant proposal you will be presenting to the grant giving body, you will need to ascertain first whether or not you are capable of writing a killer grant proposal for your idea for a business. While some people rely on a professional grant writer for this, writing your own proposal for such a venture will show the people you are asking the funds from that you are more than capable of running your own business. Doing what needs to be done to make it succeed will be seen as an attitude you have with your doing your own grant writing despite the fact that you don't have any experience with such things.

When you write your own grant proposals, you will need to first consider whether or not you are unique enough for the grant giving body to notice. You will also need to study a bit on how grant proposals are made and how to put these together. There are a number of books you can find on how to do this with step-by-step guides as well as tips on what you should and should not do when you are putting together your grant proposal for your small business. There are also seminars you can attend that will teach you how these things are made what makes a successful grant proposal get the funds that a lot of people are after.

Knowing how to write the proposal for the grants you are aiming for is the make-or-break point for your business idea and if you don't know how to do it properly, you will stand the chance of losing to someone who does not have as brilliant an idea as you do but is grant writing savvy that makes him noticeable and makes his business seem more plausible and more inclined to succeed.
