Premature Aging, How Does it Happen?

By: Valerie DeVette

As natural as it is, aging is a stage of life most people don't want to deal with. Even still, our society is always looking for ways to stay youthful. Further reading will reveal to you the causes behind premature aging and a few ways to slow it down. You may find that some of your daily habits are severely speeding up the aging process.
Causes Behind Premature Aging
The rate at which you age is determined by your genes and the environment in which you live. It varies for everyone, with some going grey as young as 20. Call your mom up and ask her when she got her first gray hairs, that will give you a clue about yourself. The sun is the cause of most premature aging. Repetitive facial expressions, gravity, sleeping positions, and smoking also contribute to premature aging. The nose, ears and eyelids begin to droop due to gravity.
Smoking, Alcohol, and Premature Aging
Smoking cigarettes is severely damaging to your health and it speeds up the aging process exponentially. They contribute to wrinkling prematurely and dryness. Vitamin C, which keeps the skin moist and plump, is depleted from your skin when you smoke. Being exposed to smoke is also damaging, so keep that in mind if you live with a smoker. Alcohol contributes to aging skin by dilating small blood vessels in the skin and increasing blood flow near the skin's surface. With time, blood vessels in the face will break, permanently damaged. This causes un-attractive dark lines on the face, further adding to premature aging.
Wrinkles
Throughout the years, collagen production slows, and elastin, the substance that enables skin to snap back into place, has a bit less spring. Dead skin cells do not shed as quickly, leading to wrinkles. In addition, facial movements actually lead to more fine lines and wrinkles. Every time we use a facial muscle, a mark is left beneath the skin's surface. As skin ages and loses its elasticity, the skin stops springing back to its line-free state, and these grooves become permanently etched on the face as fine lines and wrinkles.
Prevent Premature Aging
You can't stop time, but you can prevent premature aging by sleeping on your back, using sunscreen and quitting smoking. You could also force yourself to never smile or frown again, but that would be ridiculous advice. Proper sun protection is key to premature aging prevention. Use sunscreen of at least SPF 35 strength. Wearing a hat is not a bad idea either. To quit smoking there are countless treatments available. The moment you quit smoking your body will begin to recover. Using this information and using a high quality natural skin care cream will help you reduce the signs of premature aging. A change in a few life style choices is all it takes.
