Pregnancy and Migraines

By: EileenDavies

For the women who suffer from migraine headaches, there are not many times in your life that you will get a break from the occurrences of them. As a woman, you are constantly experiencing hormonal fluctuations and changes in blood pressure that are usually associated with menstruation or menopause. There is one time, however, that you may notice you aren't experiencing any migraines at all, and this is during pregnancy.

During pregnancy, there are a lot of changes that the body goes through to create a suitable environment for the growing fetus, especially in the first trimester. This is due to the larger than usual hormone fluctuations that occur in this part of pregnancy, as well as through the other trimesters. Most women that suffer from migraines will often say that they have noticed a substantial decrease or complete lack of migraines that they experience. Although you may enjoy the vacation from migraines, it is temporary they are likely to return when you go through your first menstrual cycle after birth.

There are also instances of women that don't experience migraines on a regular basis but will experience them during pregnancy. Again, this is due to the hormone fluctuations as well as the other changes that come with pregnancy. Weight gain, fluid retention, and blood pressure changes are all aspects that can contribute to experiencing migraine headaches during pregnancy.

If you are one of the women that are experiencing migraines during pregnancy, there are a few things that you should keep in mind. First, you should know that you should not assume that your migraines are simply due to your pregnancy; always talk to your doctor about your concerns. Secondly, if your migraines are simply due to pregnancy changes, they will usually lessen or subside completely around the second or third trimester, so they are only a temporary symptom.
