Physician Weight Scales

By: Mel Joelle

Commonly known as a “medical balance beam scale” or “physician’s weight scale”, the upright scale found predominantly in doctors’ offices, clinics, fitness centers, and health care facilities has always been known for its accuracy and durability. Contrastingly, the old bathroom spring scale is infamous for its inaccurate and transitory nature.

To many, the newer digital bathroom floor scales are not a vast improvement. As a result, they have turned to some version of a physician weight scale for home use with electronic weight technology, digital readouts, and no movable weights.

Upright floor scales now feature eye-level scales and waist-high digital readout scales that eliminate the need to look down between your feet and twisting or bending to see the reading. Of course, these scales are not designed specifically for home use but to provide more convenient and more efficient weighing for the professional.

Traveling nurses commonly use a two-piece, remote display portable floor scale and place the display on a nearby table. Alternatively, this kind of scale serves nicely as a bathroom scale with the display mounted on a wall or placed on a vanity. However, in special cases, home nursing care may require a specialized type of physician weight scale such as a bariatric scale.

Classic mechanical physician weight scales are still available with a built in height rod and a maximum capacity ranging from 350-500 lb. Digital physician weight scales still include a ruler for height measurement and provide similar weight capacities. These eye level readouts are also available with digital height measurements for automatic BMI (Body Mass Index) measurement with no need to enter the height manually.

Other features include automatic zero, motion detection, RS232 connectivity, and digital patient ID entry. These digital versions offer precise measurements of height and weight, provide readings in seconds, and save nurses valuable time Which makes them ideal for any facility. A swivel display is also available for some models providing more convenient reading by nurses.
