Natural Healing

By: Riley Evans

Many of us have had our mothers and grandmothers yell at us not to go out with a wet head, remember to wear your hat and gloves or you’re going to ‘catch your death’. But how much truth is behind what have now been deemed as old wives tales? Science has told us that 80% of our body heat does escape from the top of our heads, so yes you do need your hat-but there is no scientific proof that leaving the house with a wet head will give you pneumonia. Your body has to maintain a delicate balance of its homeostasis (your internal body temperature) so going out with a wet head or without a hat WILL make you cold and may leave you PRONE to a cold or the flu. There is also an ongoing debate as to how large of a role vitamins play in boosting the immune system, but scientists and doctors world-wide agree that consuming a well-balanced diet chock full of fruits and veggies will help you maintain a healthy immune system.

One popular natural remedy for the cold or flu is a hot toddy-a concoction of whiskey, boiling water, honey, lemon and cloves-flaunted by mainly the Irish communities for soothing and killing a bout of the flu or a cold. Though scientific evidence does not support this theory, it does support the fact that hot toddies can help relieve symptoms associated with the flu or a cold because the steam opens up your nasal passages-not to mention the alcohol helping you doze off into a peaceful sleep (after all-why do you think NyQuil ® works so well?)

What’s the world’s most popular natural cold remedy? Why it’s chicken soup of course! A 2000 study in the journal Chest showed that chicken noodle soup with vegetables decreased the action of white blood cells that spur inflammation and are also contributors to the symptoms of the common cold. But did you notice a key word there? VEGETABLES-so perhaps the answer lies in maintaining a healthy diet year round-not just when you’re feeling sick.

Remember ladies and gentlemen, the flu and cold are a viruses, and viruses do not respond to any medications OR home remedies. The best these will do is alleviate some of the symptoms that are associated with both of these illnesses so you can have some relief. So once again, Lenco Labs would like to remind everyone to eat right, get plenty of rest, exercise regularly and remember to wash your hands often to avoid the flu and cold this season, because the best defense is a good offense!
