NBA - Eddie Jordan fired by the Wizards

The Wizards coach, 53-year-old and third longest-tenured coach in the NBA Eddie Jordan, was fired of his position due to the bad results the team is having at the beginning of this season with a 1-10 record.

This was the sixth season of Jordan with the Wizards and during his management; he took the team to four playoffs, something that didnít happen in the franchise for years. Even so, on those years, the team only had one series victory at the playoffs. Jordan finished with a record of 197 wins versus 224 losses with the Washington Wizards but took the team to a better level under his leadership and changed the program around during his time at Washington.

However that work and effort didnít pay back, the chairman of the Wizard Abe Pollin decided that it was time for a change, so Jordan was informed this Monday that he was being removed of his duties. Jordanís assistant Mike OíKoren was fired as well and will be substituted by Randy Ayers. Jordan replacement will be Ed Tapscott, who was the director of player development of the Wizards and who has travelled consistently with the team as an extra assistant coach.

The Washington Wizards started their season without two of its starters, Gilbert Arenas and Bredan Haywood due to injuries. Thus, before Jordan was fired, he was relying on the forward Antwan Jamison and young players Javale Lee and Nick Young at the offense. However, with these three players that team couldnít get enough to find the way for victories. This was also one of the reasons why the team and Jordan have been struggling during this beginning of the 2008-09 season.

Moreover, it has to be mentioned that the president and the chairman of the Wizards are not happy with the results. In the last game against the Knicks, the team looked quite bad specially after knowing that the Knicks had only seven players and they still were able to win the game 122-117. Coach Jordan couldnít find the way for his players to win that game, especially due to its weak defense in which the Knicks scored 16 three pointers.

With this lost the president Ernie Grunfeld expressed this result was unacceptable and their record an intolerable one for the franchise. On the other hand, the chairman Abe Pollin alleged he was sad for firing Jordan, but it was something the team needed.

"This was an extremely difficult decision because I'm personally very fond of Eddie. He helped bring our franchise back to the playoffs and became ingrained in the Washington, community. I will forever be grateful for his dedication and hard work. However, sometimes circumstances force changesĒ said Pollin. According to him, the teamís performance did not meet his expectations, so he felt it was time to make a change.

We expect that with the inclusion of the new coach Ed Tapscott, things for the Wizards will get better and that he can take the team out of the deep hole they are in. The next Wizard game will be against the Golden State Warriors, we hope the best for them and his new coach.
