Moving Home Checklist

By: Trey Underwood

Moving home can be a very exciting, yet also a very stressful time. It is important to get yourself and your home well-prepared and organized well in advanced. If you are moving to a new home and are feeling overwhelmed, then read the following guide to help you get everything down to a more digestible level!

One month prior to moving

Around one month prior to moving you should work out your moving budget. Surprisingly many leave this to the last minute, and then find they have dramatically under budgeted for their move. Make sure you work out a realistic moving budget well in advance, so you don't have any financial shocks at the last minute. Once you have done so, search for a furniture removals company that can carry out the job required within the budget you have allocated. Now is also the time to construct your own itemized list of tasks (in addition to this suggested list).

3 weeks prior to moving

You should have your removal company booked by this stage. Talk to service companies now too, and arrange a date for connecting your phone, internet, electric, and other services required. Begin to purchase any important items required for your home. \

2 weeks prior to moving

Now is the time to start de-cluttering. Cleaning and clearing out your home at this stage will make the move much easier. Plus, it will feel good to get rid of all unnecessary clutter. Anything of value that you no longer require can be sold or given to charity. Take time to get your finances in order and inform your bank of your new address.

1 week prior to moving

Check that everything is in place for the move, such as checking that the removal company booking is confirmed and that all is going ahead with regards to internet and telephone access, and other services and utilities in your new home. If the moving company you have chosen are not packers and do not supply packing supplies, now is the time to purchase them. Begin an inventory of all your items and furniture, and plan out where you plan to have your items placed in the new home. Then begin packing items into the packing boxes, making sure to label all the boxes correctly. Note that it is a good idea to keep aside simple items you may need quickly, such as a kettle and coffee and teas. When you move to your new home, chances are you will like to take a break whilst packing, so having a kettle and other items on hand will make things easier.

Moving day

If you have followed the suggested steps, your moving day should not be too stressful. The movers should set about collecting and delivering your pre-packed items to your new home. All that should be left for you to do is ensure that all your services and utilities are running as planned, and that all the moved items are set up according to the layout plan you devised month earlier.
