Major elements of Urdu Drama

An Urdu Drama is a serious, intense, and a well plotted story that is being enacted on the stage. It marks its own glory in the Islamic History by portraying the best form of art to the language lovers. This piece of art is the best form of entertainment that elicits different emotions and feelings in one play. The term ‘Drama’ comes back from a Greek word ‘to act’ meaning action and plays a major in world of entertainment.
Traditionally in the Islamic History, Urdu Drama was performed on the stage before an audience, but nowadays it has moved to television, Radio, and to the theatre as well due to the innovations in the media channels and the entertainment field. Today, one can find such plays easily on a TV show, a movie, Broadway show, etc.
The main elements of Urdu Drama are as follows:
• Actors:
Actors are various persons that play a role in the Drama. The meaning of the word actor is ‘one who interprets’. They can be any individuals who act in a dramatic or comic production and works in film, television, theatre or radio etc. Thus, an actor is one who interprets a dramatic character in the play.
• Dialogue:
Dialogue is a literary and theatrical form consisting of a written or spoken conversational exchange between two or more actors. The Dialogue is the line that have to be delivered to the audience in the artistic way.
• Actions:
The action is a class of creative works characterized by more emphasis on exciting action sequences than on character development or storytelling in the drama. It is the mode that fiction writers use to show what is happening at any given moment in the story. Action includes movement, not simply like standing up, but big movements. The term is also used to describe an existing event or circumstance in the play.
• Convention:
A convention is an event in which fans of a particular film, Drama, actor, or an entire genre of entertainment gathers to participate and hold events, and to meet experts, famous personalities, and each other.
• Plot:
The plot is a literary the set of events that make up a story, particularly as they relate to one another in a pattern, in a sequence, through cause and effect, how the reader views the story, or simply by coincidence. It is the sequential flow of the play.
• Audience:
An audience is a group of people who participate in a Drama or encounter a work of art, literature, theatre or a play. Audience members participate in different ways in different kinds of art plays. Some events invite overt audience participation and others allowing only modest clapping and criticism and reception.
• Theme:
The theme is considered as the soul of the play. A theme is a broad idea or a message conveyed by a work of action, such as a performance, a play, or a motion picture. The message it transmits is generally about life, society or human nature. Themes are the fundamental and often universal ideas explored in an artistic work. Themes are usually implied rather than explicitly stated.
• Stagecraft:
The stagecraft refers to the technical aspects of theatrical, film, and video production. It includes constructing and rigging scenery, hanging and focusing of lighting, design and procurement of costumes, makeup, and procurement of props, stage management, and recording and mixing of sound in the play.
• Character:
A character is one of the persons who appear in the play. The treatment of the character is the basic part of the writer’s work. Generally, plays contain major characters and minor characters, and protagonists and antagonists.
