Learn These Elementary Pencil Drawing Tricks

There are diverse ways of holding a pencil for drawing. There isn't one ideal way, but several choices, depending on what you are trying to draw.

The Various Ways to Hold a Pencil for Drawing

* Hold your pencil like a writing instrument, close to the tip, when sketching outlines or adding details to your illustration. This allows maximum control of the pencil.

* To illustrate long, steady or flowing lines, grab the pencil near the middle with the end steadily in your palm. This provides stability and control to produce long, even lines.

* While shading bigger areas, take full advantage of holding the pencil midway, inclined sideways so it is almost parallel to the sheet. This makes available the side of the graphite to draw even strokes.

* For areas needing darker shades, grab the pencil close to the tip ( the pencil is underneath your hand) and push the side of the head to the paper. This results tones of deeper, darker colors for tiny areas of dark shading.

The Ideal Amount of Pressure for Drawing with Pencils

The quantity of pressure needed when drawing with pencils is different depending on the end effect you want and how hard the pencil is. For laying out the preliminary sketch, use a hard pencil with mild pressure.

Softer pencils leave darker lines, so depending on how dark you desire the area to be; you will have to modify pressure. For example, a 9B pencil with a heavy hand will produce a very dark line and with a lighter hand it will still be dark but less so.

There is no fixed guideline for the quantity of pressure to apply. Try with different pencils and pressures to achieve the effects you want.

You should keep one thing in mind: for drawing darker lines forever prefer using a softer pencil over providing more pressure. The reason: excess pressure may spoil the paper.

Learn Outlining with Fast and Smooth Pencil Movements

The most significant element of famous drawings is the skill to draw with swift and smooth movements.

This needs practicing and self-confidence. To exercise drawing smoothly and self-assuredly, begin with your basic sketches using a hard pencil. Use a light hand for this a simple outline of your drawing.

These lines may not even be observed in your finished piece. Do not show excessive concern with each stroke; let your gut feeling help you. As you gain more experience, you will become more confident of your skills and techniques. This self-belief will guide you to take swift even strokes of your tools.

Keep a sketchbook with you and when something inspires you, use it! These will help you most to learn pencil drawing.
