When you search for pink cowboy boots, you go where? Google, of course. And when you go to Google, what do you type? Likely something like "pink cowboy boots" or "buy pink cowboy boots", right? Then don't get too creative with your item titles and call them "Princess Pony Boots". Nobody is searching for princess pony boots, they're searching for pink cowboy boots. Handmade jewelry sellers do this a lot, as well; they have a gorgeous blue necklace for sale, and instead of titling it "blue handmade necklace with sapphire and sterling silver", they title it "Aurora's Dream". Great title, but nobody is searching for that. The more clear, concise, and item description oriented your web content is, the better customers will be able to find you. Search SEO on the internet, buy a good book on SEO, and get very familiar with it.

If you don't know what Google Analytics is, start getting familiar because it is an invaluable tool for your business. Additionally, it's free! Signing up for a Google Analytics account means that Google Analytics tracks the traffic to your website. This is absolutely key to your business. You can see what countries your viewers are from, states and cities, too, as well as when they're on your site, how much time they spend there, the pages they view the most, how many repeat visitors you have, feature usage, and so much more. This tool will give you a virtual profile for your customers. If you aren't attracting the audience you want, you can modify your approach. If you see that most people are shopping from their phones, you might consider mobile optimization for your website. Use this tool to your advantage; it will be your best friend in knowing who's on your site.
You must advertise to bring in customers. Don't get too flowery with the text of your advertising. An eye-catching, simple, and informative ad is the best one. If you sell flowers, a brighter advertising image, a photo of your product, and a few words on what your specialty is will be enough. If it's a text add only, don't give the whole history of Faye's Flowers, just tell them what they want to know; who are you, what do you sell, and why should they choose you?
Do some research on which advertising options are best for you. I would suggest searching for your product as though you were a shopper and seeing what ads pop up. Always start searching as though you were the customer; this will help you reverse engineer your advertising tactics because you'll know what's already out there, how to stand out, and where other people are advertising. If your competition is advertising somewhere, you need to be, too.
While there are infinite pages that could be written on how to attract customers to your website, these three areas will give you the best foundation and are the simplest places to start. If you have good SEO, you're looking at the shopping habits of your visitors, and you're advertising, you have a very good base foundation for attracting business to your e-commerce site. From there, you can keep building, but the foundation will be set.
