Story :

The milieu Kalakalappu was set up in the actual Kumbakonam village. The tale revolves around two siblings Seenu [Vimal] and Raghu [Shiv], who tries maintain their famous ancestral restaurant ‘Masala Café’. Seenu is a soft spoken guy and so it's tough time for him alone to seek the area running, however he manages to run the café by using an old chef and his grand-daughter Maya [Oviya Helen]. Meanwhile enters our heroine Madhavi [Anjali], who works like a Health Inspector seeking to seal the Masala Café.

Conversely Seenu continue to run his Café by using Madhavi, who falls for him. Here comes Seenu’s more youthful brother Raghu [Shiva], a smooth spoken conning guy just released from prison. Raghu brings more problems into their lives, by proposing Maya. In-between Vimal and Shiv get tangled right into a case of missing diamonds. How did they emerge from the case? What did they do to return their Masala Café? Makes the crux of Kalakalappu.

Shows:

Vimal suits the role of Seenu well, like a soft spoken person. At times it feels like Vimal’s potentials weren't utilized best, though his chemistry with Anjali is really a big plus for Kalakalappu.

Anjali as a Wellness Inspector did her part well, proving she could give her best in performance oriented roles aside from being glamorous. John Vijay for the role of the ‘sirippu’ police officer has been fruitful.

Sundar D. has grabbed the perfect needed essences from Shiv like a smart, naughty and greedy guy. Shiv captured the interest of viewers with one-liners such as, “When old Billa could be remade into a successful one, why not rebuilding old dishes. ”

Oviya has smoke the screen together with Anjali in ‘Ivalunga imsai’ track, but has to enhance a lot in passing the comic dialogues. Santhanam’s entry within the second half made audiences jump out and chuckle. Manobala is an important ingredient in contributing the entertainment factor from the film. VS Raghavan and Ilavarasu did justice for their roles.

Technical Analysis:

Sundar C’s formula of presenting a comedy cracker has won the viewers laughers for that 25th time in his career. The director’s range of Vimal and Shiv as siblings with exactly reverse natures worked big time on screens.

Vijay Ebenezer’s composition within the songs and the background score has lifted in the film’s humor in a big way. Tunes are very peppy with Angelina being the pick of the actual lot. The melody Unnaipattri Unnidame has also already been picturised well.

Cinematographer UK Senthil has perfectly presented the softness in the frames. He has to become specially appreciated for his picturisation particularly in the songs alongside the artworks. The usage of traditional art pieces like ‘Pattam’ and ‘Chamaram’ within the song ‘Ava Thirumbipaarthu’, considering that the song may be shot in the temple town of Kumbakonam has had the movie to a step high.

Analysis:

Director has the capacity to raise every scene to provide the maximum chuckle. It reminds you of early Priyadarsan comedies combined with Crazy Mohan style comedy of errors.

Vimal’s chemistry with Anjali is really a big plus for the film. Though the movie starts slowly, the director mange to pick in the pace after Shiv joins Vimal. Though the director has meant to show Vimal in a ‘Harischandran’ like character, his so called truthfulness makes him look stupid sometimes. Also, the concentration on glamour is too much in nearly every song sequence. It could have been reduced as to the was necessary.

The highlight scenes in the movie would be the car chase in the village where everyone operates around in circles, while the dog running away using the diamonds. Among the comic characters it is Ilavarasu because Ajuvatti Alagesan and his many disguises and misadventures that steal the show. The laugh spinning line-up consists of Santhanam, Vimal, Shiv, Anjali, John Vijay and others using their unpredictable running gags. Oviya looks glamorous but the woman's comic timing needs more polish.

Final Verdict:

Kalakalappu is really a comic entertainer in this hot summer….
