Is It Time for You to Retire Yet?

By: John Bose

If you are thinking about retiring, give it some careful thought first. Make sure it is really, what you want to do. There is no set age you have to retire at, but as long as you think you have worked enough and have enough money to live on, you should be able to retire whenever you want to.
If you can afford to retire, you should be congratulated. Now that you do not have to work every day, you can do a lot more things with your time just for you. You can do just about, whatever you want, whenever you want to. Doesn't that sound absolutely wonderful?
When you retire, that means you will likely get some money from the company you have worked with for a number of years. Whether it is a lot of money, a little money, or none at all really depends on your situation. You have to figure out whether or not you have enough money to retire based upon your own situation.
Normally, people who are getting older look forward to retiring. We cannot control getting older, although many of us may be able to continue carrying on with fulfilling, energetic lives. Others may not be able to, though, and maybe somewhat infirm. If you cannot work anymore, how can you live? On your retirement income, of course.
When you retire, you can likely go places you have wanted to see for many years. Now's the time. Go ahead, and take a holiday in whatever place you choose, such as renting out a beach house for six months. Or, perhaps you want to move from the place you have lived for so many years and start a new life in an entirely new place.
Once you retire, if you want to, you can start an entirely new career; some people do indeed do this and do very well. If you do not want to start a new career or even have any type of job, though, that is fine as long as you can financially afford not to work. Go ahead and relax, doing as you please, for the remainder of your life. You deserve it; you have worked hard. Now's the time to do what you want to do, not what someone else wants you to do. With no boss anymore, you are entirely driven by your free will.
Decide what you want to do; perhaps you want to get up before the sun does and go fishing, do some chores around the house, take up an exercise program, go on vacation, and even sail around the world. Or, maybe you are even daring enough to go bungee jumping, or go scuba diving. As long as your health will permit, you can literally do anything you want to do.
Now is your chance, so take advantage of it. Many people somehow feel "useless" if they are not working, but you should not feel that way. After all, it is because you have worked so hard for so many years that you can retire now. If you had not worked as hard as you have for so many years, you would never be able to retire and do exactly as you please now.
However, one thing you need to keep in mind about retirement is that you have to be ready for it emotionally. You also have to be ready for financially, which means that you know you will have enough money to take care of your needs for the rest of your life. Do not retire if you will be running out of money within a few years.
That is simply not the way to do it. You have to be absolutely sure that you want to retire and that you can do so, both financially and emotionally. Retirement is a big step for everyone, so it is not something to be taken lightly. However, if you know you are ready and it is absolutely what you want to do, if you have thought long and hard about it and you are absolutely unshakably certain that retirement is the way to go, and then you are ready.
You do not have to be eighty years old when you retire. You can do it whenever you feel you can. But be reasonable. You do not want to sit around for fifty years doing nothing. Besides, if you take an early retirement that young you are likely not going to have that much money under your belt, which could end up as being a really bad thing a few years down the line. Do not make the decision a hasty one. Think it through and talk to someone about it before you make your final decision.
Remember that when you retire, you should really be able to have fun and do what you want to do, with no one stopping you. If you want to go to the Bahamas and spent significant time there just playing on the beach, then do it. As long as your responsibilities and finances allow it, nothing should stop you.
