The much awaited Windows 8.1 OS is now available in the market and can be easily downloaded from Microsoft’s Windows Web Store. The new OS can be easily installed a in a few simple steps. Follow the below mentioned steps to upgrade your Windows 8 PC to Windows 8.1:
Step 1. Look for system requirements
If you are upgrading your PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, then you shouldn’t worry about the OS requirements. The system requirements for Windows 8.1 are similar to Windows 8, but it is recommended to check the full list of Windows 8.1 requirements. The basic system configuration required to update Windows 8.1 are:
1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster with support for PAE, SSE2 and NX
1 gigabyte (GB) (32-bit) or 2 GB (64-bit)
Hard disk space
16 GB (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit)
Microsoft DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM driver
In additional to this, you may require some other hardware or software to access other exciting features in the new OS.
Step 2. Backup your data
Create a backup of all your important documents, pictures, videos, and other valuable data. You can either choose to create a system image, or you can easily backup your data on an external hard drive, a network location, and storage devices such as CDs or DVDs. In case you have a File History set up, you are advised to run it before heading towards the update. You can also use Google Drive, Dropbox, Microsoft SkyDrive, MozyHome Free, and SugarSync to backup your data safely.
Step 3. Check for the latest updates on Windows 8
Check all the latest updates for your PC via Microsoft’s Windows Update, before starting with the installation process. It is advisable to check all the updates manually even if you have already automated updates on your system. Before clicking the ‘Ok’ button on the installation tab, make sure that your system is plugged into a power supply and is connected to the Internet for proper and complete installation of updates. Ø Click ‘Settings’ under the Charms menu

Step 4. Now, Download and Install Windows 8.1
Go to the Start screen > Click the Windows Store tile, with the shopping bag icon, and select Windows 8.1 panel on the Windows Store homepage. If you are not able to view Windows 8.1 panel, then you need to install the latest Windows updates prior to updating the OS. Or you may be running an unsupported edition of Windows 8, which does not allow the free update from the Windows Store. To install Windows 8.1 follow the step-wise description of the installation process mentioned below:
Ø Navigate to the Start screen and Open the Windows Store app
Ø Click the ‘Update to Windows 8.1’ button and if you don’t see this button try reopening the Windows Store or reboot your system
Ø Now, Click the ‘Download’ button for easy downloading of OS
Ø Patiently wait for half an hour or more for the software to download, although you can use your PC during this time
Ø Click the ‘Restart Now’ button and wait for a few minutes as at least one reboot is required while installing Windows 8.1
Ø Click the ‘I Accept’ button, when prompted with the License terms on first boot after complete installation
Ø Make a choice between ‘Express Settings’ and ‘Custom Settings,’ and Click the same according to your preferences at the bottom of the screen
Ø ‘Sign in’ to your Windows account and ask Windows to send a security code to your phone for assuring that sensitive data on your PC is secure and is not accessible without your permission
Ø Enter the code you have received on your mobile and proceed to the Skydrive screen
Ø Click the ‘Next’ button and wait for Windows to finish its installation process
Ø Now, your screen will display the message that the system is setting up and installing few important and necessary apps
Ø After a few minutes, the Windows 8.1 Start screen will appear and you’re done
Step 5. Install your favorite apps, Restart and enjoy
After successful installation, go to Start screen, download and reinstall all the required apps manually from ‘Your apps’ section of Windows Store. You can install multiple apps by selecting them all at once and then clicking the ‘Install’ button. Offering you more productive environment, these apps will automatically get downloaded in the background while you work. If possible, Restart once again and enjoy the exciting experience of this all-new OS.
