Important Packaging Equipments Used The World Over

All packaged goods are courtesy of specialized equipment that bag products be it free flowing, granular or liquid. They can guarantee sanitation and work much faster than we ever could manually.

The technology applied to packaging has evolved over the years from natural materials such as reeds and wooden boxes which had to be bagged by hand to plastic and paper bags and cartons that can be operated on machines. The same packaging can be recycled to cut down cost and reduce the burden on the environment.

There are numerous packaging machines with each serving specific roles such as capping equipment that closes and seals lids on bottles and cans, cartoners that shape cartons and filling machines that fill containers with products. Bagging machines work with either open mouth bags or valve bags. Let's take a closer look at what technology today has given birth to.

Capping machines: Prior to marketing, jars and bottles are capped and sealed airtight (unless required otherwise) to prevent oxygen from making a mess of the contents. The construction and engineering of the machines vary from make to make but there are basic processes that get a bottle going from uncapped state to capped and completely sealed in a matter of minutes.

Cartoners: Cartoners or cartoning machines are equipments that form cartons from boards into erected, folded and closed packages. The boards themselves are carefully designed to fit slots into each other. Tabs and adhesives are applied by the cartoners after they're filled and formed into shape.

Filling machines: Filling machines are, perhaps, the commonest type of packaging equipment for the simple reason that every package must be filled before being sold. Fillers work on liquids thin and high viscosity and dry goods. Flow filling machines, agitator filling machines, and positive displacement pump fillers are some types of filling machines.

Bagging machines: Bagging machines calculate, fill, close and seal bags according to preprogrammed commands. They're similar to filling machines and, in fact, are usually clubbed under the category. However, they're typically set aside for dry goods such as wheat flour.

Bagging equipments work with open mouth bags and valve bags. They also handle bulk materials and baling for straw, animal bedding, wood shavings etc.

Palletizer: Palletizers are not strictly packaging machines but they're considered as such because of the role they play in the manufacturing industry. They may not fill or bag but they stack up products and goods onto pallets. Automation plays a big part with all modern palletizers relying on robotics to make quick work.

Form fill and seal machines: Most machines are designed to handle one task at a time but form fill and seal machines are assembly-line systems that can handle these three tasks. One station rolls out a flat, continuous sheet of plastic which is fed into another station which seals one end, opens the other, fills it and seals the other end shut. The packages are filled with inert gas during the sealing process which protects the contents from damage. The gas also drives out oxygen which can cause bacteria to form.

There are numerous other packaging machines that industries use and every product and package type requires the use of specific equipments.
