How to Sell In Various Currencies

By: Lina Stakauskaite

Having a website and selling items online means that you have opened your business up to a global market. This means customers that speak different languages to you and that will need to know what the product will cost them in their own currency.

While there are many ways to search online to see what the conversion rate is between currencies, you want to make it as easy as possible for your international clients.

Website Design and Shopping Cart

When you design your website it makes sense that your prices are displayed in your home currency. You may find that a majority of your clientele are from your home country and a portion of your clients are international.

Keep a record of your sales to determine which other countries you sell to, this will help you determine which alternative currencies to offer on your site. You can't list all the currencies, that will leave you with so much to work out, so having a handful of currencies to the most popular countries you sell to will probably be the easiest solution.

If you have chosen a reputable shopping cart you will often be given the option to display a number of currencies. The best way to do this is to use a drop down menu, enabling customers to choose their home currency from the list you provide.

Once they purchase in their own currency, you need to ensure it arrives on your side in your home currency. There are a number of ways you can do this.

Option 1

The first option is to display various currencies but when the customer pays for the item they are still paying in your home currency. This can be explained easily on the site to show to them what it is costing them in their own currency, even when they click the "pay now" button it changes.

This way you are guaranteed that the money arriving in your bank account is the right currency.

Option 2

The second option is to allow the customer to purchase in their own currency and use a good payment program, such as PayPal, which will carry out the conversion for you. There is sometimes a small fee for this conversion so bear this in mind and add it to the price if necessary.

Whichever option you choose remember that you need to keep your conversion rates updated if your shopping cart doesn't offer this option, you need to ensure that the necessary currencies are displayed and you need the flexibility to add new currencies as and when needed.

You can offer the option that customers contact you if they want to know the price in another currency or you can add a link to one of the conversion sites. But to ensure you achieve the best international sales, offering the various currencies on your site will attract more international buyers, improve sales turnover and ensure that you truly enjoy a global business.

Moreover, you can find affiliate network which helps you sell in various currencies and provides opportunity to collect money for the sales in one currency. Just look for such network and take advantage of it- customers will appreciate it.
