How to Propose to a Woman so She Says Yes

By: Lindsy Emery

In a world where men and women are pretty much equals, there is still one area that is known as a man’s job. Proposing marriage is almost always the responsibility of you, the guy. You can look at it as an opportunity to plan something really special to sweep your girlfriend off her feet. So figuring out how to propose to a woman is one of the most important things you’ll ever do.

If you’re considering proposing, the first thing you must decide is what type of ring to get for your girlfriend. The four things you need to decide about the ring are:

• type of metal for the band
• cut of the diamond
• size and location of sidestones (if any)
• width of the band

Of these four, the first point is the most important. Most women either love silver or they love gold—check out the jewelry that she wears most often to know which she prefers.

Once you’ve gotten the ring all taken care of, the next step is deciding how you’re going to propose. There is no end to the list of creative and romantic ways you could propose. They could be elaborate and costly, or simple and free. You could propose on a weekend Carribbean cruise or in your own living room. The timing and the expense of your proposal is up to you. You will plan the details all on your own.

If it sounds like a lot of pressure, it is. But don’t worry. Before you get all bent out of shape, know that there’s no time limit on how long you have to think about this. You can wait to propose until you’ve had time to nail down all the details and work out the perfect way to pop the question to your girlfriend.

Think about her preferences, her likes and dislikes, and her personality to give you an idea of what type of proposal she would like. Some women who love surprises might like something completely off the wall, like taking the mic at karaoke night and asking her to marry you after you perform your song. But a quiet nature lover might prefer taking a hike to a secluded area and being proposed to.

It all depends on her and her preferences, so don’t let yourself forget that she is the most important factor in this decision. But don’t let yourself get too worked up about this enormous pressure—at the end of the day she loves you, not just the way you propose to her.
