Caffeine is a great drink and something that a lot of us practically rely on to get through our days. Many of us will start our mornings with a caffeine drink, and others will rely on it to get us through long car journeys or nights swatting up on revision.
Caffeine is good for this because it stimulates our brain and triggers something similar to the 'fight or flight' response in our bodies causing us to be more energetic and switched on even when our body is telling us to go to bed. At the same time, because it also releases dopamine and is nicely warming the way most of us drink it, it also makes us feel good and is ideal for relaxing and unwinding.
But the bad news is that caffeine doesn't come without side effects, though these vary from person to person. For one, if you drink too much caffeine this will mean that your body is constantly working at a higher level. Your heart rate and blood pressure will be constantly elevated and you will find yourself feeling jittery and finding it hard to sleep. Of course over time this can be bad for us and places our system under too much stress so it's important we don't have too much. Meanwhile caffeine can also cause headaches in high doses and insomnia, and over time it's also highly addictive meaning you can become almost dependent on it to get through the day and find it hard to come off of it without experienced withdrawal symptoms like headaches.
So if you find yourself drinking too much caffeine, or if you just want to be a bit healthier, then it's a good idea to quit. Here's how...
Step 1: Find a Replacement
This is one of the most important steps to help you stop craving caffeine - finding a replacement means that you won't have a hankering for a warm drink or feel lost without it when you sit down to read a book. Drinking leaf tea here is a great idea because it can still be refreshing and revitalizing and because it contains all the same benefits such as the high antioxidant content. This also means you can offer guests something different but still warm and comforting when they come round.
Step 2: Wean Yourself Off
Now you might have an urge to completely cut yourself off at the source and stop having any caffeine at all in your diet. This would be a big mistake however as it would cause headaches and shaking and difficulty sleeping. It's much easier to simply reduce your caffeine intake over time and you can do this by making strict rules such as 'I can only have caffeine once in the morning and once in the afternoon'. Stick to this and when it becomes easier reduce it further.
Note however that if you want to be really strict that you should also limit your intake of chocolate and soda drinks - they contain caffeine too. That said the content is so minimal that for most people this won't be an issue. Good luck!
