[I:25:J]Time can be manipulated at will, for it flows like a liquid. Time seems to be a fixed thing, used to measure the object and paths of the universe, and it seems to be quite set. If one engages in a little martial arts training, however, they will soon see that time is aone measuring stick that is extremely flexible.
If a person has a certain presence of mind it is very simple to understand time. By understanding the theory I am about to give you, and applying it to the martial arts, a person can gain this presence of mind. There are four distinct stages, or steps, to this theory.
To see/think/react is the first step. Sees a threat, the beginner thinks about it, and finally reacts. One might call this the block and counter stage.
The second step is to see/react. Through practice, the student eliminates having to think about a technique and goes from seeing a threat to reacting to it. A student is getting faster at this stage of timing, and he is usually able to block and counter with the same hand.
To merely react is the third step. The student is becoming more polished, and he doesn't even need to see a threat to react, he is actually starting to have a sixth sense when a threat is about and whirls to meet it. This stage would be a simultaneous block and counter stage.
The fourth step is act. A student perceives a threat developing and moves before it can result in a raised fist or launched foot. Simply, the person has eliminated rea-, which is reaction time, and is moving in the moment.
Mushin no shin, is what the Japanese called moving in the moment, and it means mind of no mind, which mindset is manifest through time of no time. A person is not a victim of the world when he achieves this stage, only capable of reacting to a threat, but he is an actual master of the world, able to see things before they happen, and act accordingly. There is immense and developing choice at this a stage.
Time is actually a perception of the world, not just a way of measuring it. Training your perceptions is how you handle the world. When studying the martial arts this is just one of the many things that can happen.
