Hip dysplasia is a serious disease which affects mostly large dogs; although in some cases it affects puppies. The ligaments, connective tissue and surfaces wear down, either because of extra weight, nutrition, and over exercise. This can cause a lot of pain and discomfort, because it usually results in osteoarthrisis. This is why it is always important to manage and treat hip dysplasia medically. Thankfully, although this is an inherited, genetic condition (which means that doctors cannot stop it from happening), there are some ways to slow down progression of this degenerative disease.
Managing your dogís weight is important if he or she has hip dysplasia. For every breed and dog size, there is a recommended weight. It is best to stick to this weight, because it reduces the pressure on the hip joints. Too much weight can aggravate the situation, causing the surfaces to lose contact with each other. While there are some surgical procedures and medical treatments available to reduce the weight of your pet, you still have the responsibility of feeding your dog the right amount and kind of food. Alongside a healthy diet is exercise. This is very important if you want to reduce your dogís weight. You need something that gives your dog a lot of motion, and allows him or her to build muscle without wearing or tearing down the joints. Usually, swimming is a good form of exercise because it is low-impact. Walking (on a leash or treadmill) or slow jogging is also a good idea. Itís also best to do a little exercise daily, instead of doing a lot of exercise weekly.
When your dog gets diagnosed with hip dysplasia, your veterinarian will teach you how to give your dog physical therapy. This relaxes the muscles of the dog, which gives him or her more motion. Itís also best to buy your dog a ramp because he/she may have difficulty going up and down elevated areas. There are certain oral supplements you can get for your dog. The most common supplements you can get are glucosamine and chondroitin, which are also used by humans to help manage osteoarthritis as well. They help restore and maintain the cartilage in the joints. They also help inhibit enzymes that damage the joint. Letting your dog eat certain food will also help relieve him/her. Mussels (green-lipped) are great to give your dog. They should be separated from the hard shell. You should wash them and freeze dry them. When they are hard, the batch should be made into fine powder. A lot of glucosamine is found in mussels. Meanwhile, omega-3 fatty acids which can be found in fish are also great because they have a lot of anti-inflammatory properties.
Duralactin is another product that might help relieve your dog from hip dysplasia,. They are generally used for musculoskeletal disorders of dogs. However, you might need a prescription in order to get one of these. A more recent product is called the Denosyl SD4, which is mostly used by people with arthritis, but is advocated for the use of dogs.
