Antioxidants are naturally occurring substances found in most plants and have the potential to help combat heart diseases and fight cancer. In plants these are called phytonutrients and are able to work together with our body's own nutrients to fight disease. Research into these fantastic compounds continues with over nine hundred compounds discovered already; these protective plant compounds are an emerging area of health and nutrition, with new research reported almost daily. To date a large number of health giving benefits of these phytonutrients have been found; cherries for instance are able to reduce the pain in joints and blueberries have anti-aging properties.

Containing less sugar than most fruits, the blueberry can also boast a number of other antioxidant properties too. Often the easiest way for people to take fruit is in juice form which are readily available all year round; this will help improve our healing ability and blood circulation. Not content with helping to prevent illness, these antioxidants also help fight disease and infection. Apples are now coming under the spotlight as potential helpers in the struggle against heart illness.

The likes of many citrus fruits also have health benefits associated with the phytochemicals they contain. The combination of phytonutrients in cherries is proving to have properties that can help sufferers of joint pain and fibromyalgia. The benefits of vitamins B, C, E and certain other minerals are well studied and widely known. Blackberries, mulberries, and especially blueberries are rich in powerful antioxidants like resveratrol.

Many aging conditions, including Alzheimer's, can be treated with some of these. The humble tomato has also been under scrutiny with benefits it has guarding against certain cancers and heart problems. The best way to concentrate these antioxidant properties has been found when we use tomato sauce, puree and juice.

Some of the most important phytonutrients so far found have been discovered in watermelons. With all the natural goodness fruit contains and now the health benefits as well, isn't it time for you to start having more fruit in your diet.
