How Do I rank in Local Search?

By: Mel Joelle

If you run an offline business or even an online business that revolves around attracting local customers and clients it is essential that you not only have a website but that you also get it ranked high in the search engines such as Google. Having a web presence is useless if no one sees your website and you’ll only attract new customers if you maintain a high level of visibility which isn’t going to happen if you’re buried way down on the 50th page of Google. Here are some tips to help you get your site ranking high for local search results.

Ranking with Google Places

If you run a local business this is by far one of the most powerful ways to get noticed online. When someone types something like “Camden plumber” into Google a list of Camden plumbers in Google Places is the first thing shown. Getting listed in Google Places is easy, you just create an account, but getting listed high in local search results requires a bit more work. A few things you can do to increase your ranking is to fill out your business page completely, get your business mentioned on other sites, get your business listed in directories such as Yahoo Superpages and Angie’s List and getting reviews on your Google Places page as well as in other locations.

Using Other Citations

In addition to being listed in places such as Yahoo Superpages you’re going to want to make sure that your business is mentioned in as many data providers as possible. Not only will this get you more exposure it will also build links to your main website, pushing it up the local search results. Several examples of services you will want to register with are infoUSA, Localeze and Yellowbook.

The goal here is to build a link network between all of your properties. This way your Google Places listing, your website and your other citations will work together to boost each other in the search engine rankings.

On-Page SEO

While link building is off-page SEO you’re also going to want to make sure that your on-page SEO is top-notch as well. On-page SEO revolves around keyword placement and density. On your website, in your listings and on your Google Places page you need to have relevant keywords in the title, first sentence, h1 tag and sprinkled throughout the rest of the text. You also want to have a reliant keyword in the domain name of your website as well.

For example; let’s say you are a plumber in Camden. If you can get the url “camdenplumber.com” that’s great. If not, choose something like “bestcamdenplumber.com.” Also make sure you have the keyword “Camden plumber” in the text of your web pages and the other locations previously mentioned at at least a 2% density. Just don’t over do it, search engines don’t like keyword spam.

Another thing you should realize is that when choosing keywords think of it from a customer’s perspective. While your business may be called “Johnson’s Plumbing” that isn’t what a new customer is going to type into Google. In most cases they will type something along the lines of a city name and the word “plumber,” “plumbing,” or something of that nature. These are the words you want to target.

Bonus Tip for Ranking in Local Search

While the general principals of SEO are pretty basic it can be extremely time consuming to execute an effective SEO strategy. If you are a business owner and just don’t have the time it can be worth your while to hire an online SEO firm to do this for you. Traditional advertising such as listing in the phone book or in a newspaper are quickly becoming outdated. If you’re still advertising this way why not take some of that money and hire an SEO firm to optimize your online marketing campaign? This is a great way to bring in new customers and increase your advertising ROI.
