History of Pizza

By: Sarah Carlye

Pizza is one of the world’s most popular fast food items. In fact, a lot of people have probably even tried to make it at home. However, a lot of people probably don’t know anything about the history of pizza.

A lot of researchers speak about the Neolithic Age’s influence on pizza. They also believe that Italy is the hub where a lot of different types of pizza were created. This is because it was what the peasants ate for several centuries. Unfortunately though, it really isn’t easy to say who actually invented the very first pizza. It is also important to note that the early stages of pizza’s modification can possibly be found in Greek and Persian writings. There are also a lot of food historians who believe that people who lived in the Mediterranean regions, which would include both the Egyptians and the Greeks, made dishes, similar to pizza.

Regardless of where pizza may have gotten its start, its popularity has definitely spread throughout the world. This is especially true in England, Spain, and the United States. It occurred after World War II when Italy’s major territories had been conquered and soldiers were able to taste pizza for the very first time. These soldiers really liked the pizza that they tasted and thus Italian immigrants in America began selling pizza in their stores for the very first time. However, it wasn’t until these soldiers returned to America with a hunger for this pizza that it started moving out of the Italian neighborhoods and into the mainstream of most cities’ daily life throughout the United States. The square Sicilian pizza was actually the forerunner of what Italians call the “party pizza,” which is an American invention.

Today it is estimated that nearly everyone who lives in the United States and Canada eats approximately 23 pounds of pizza each year. The most favorite types of pizza are cheese and pepperoni. This is especially true with the younger people. Of course, pizza has taken on many different forms today, including candy pizza, ice cream pizza, Mexican pizza, and many other types as well.

Cooking pizza is an art form. In order to learn the best way of cooking pizza, you should enroll in a culinary program that is offered at a nearby culinary college. There, inquisitive and hard working students will be prepared for both the conventional and the unconventional culinary challenges that come with making pizza. Many of these colleges will also prepare you to work with the world’s top chefs, if that is your desire.
