One of the best aspects of the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program at Centennial College is that it allows anyone with an interest in the field; at minimum an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or mature student status (19 years or older); as well as credentials for compulsory English 12C or U, or skills assessment, or equivalent; and Math 11M or U, or 12C or U, or skills assessment, or equivalent, to apply. As such, the program is pretty much open to anyone who is looking to acquire a broad knowledge of the design, installation and service techniques of heating and air conditioning systems for commercial and residential settings.
As such, handy Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technicians who enjoy working with their hands in the maintenance and installation area will enjoy duties such as: maintaining, sizing and selecting equipment for air conditioning and refrigeration application; the development of refrigerants; measuring, cutting and connecting piping using welding and brazing equipment; recharging systems with refrigerant gases as required; connecting rooftop units to gas, testing and balancing systems and connecting electrical systems; adjusting computerized controls; using computer software to calculate loads, and working on large machines. Meanwhile, those who take to the creative side will collaborate with other professionals on the design and retrofit of building systems; calculate heat loads and size pipes, air distribution ducts and equipment; plan site layouts and develop drawings using computer-aided design software, and more.
However, not only do students gain knowledge in these areas but the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program teaches the development of equipment to meet the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) standards and efficiency standards for heating equipment; installation and service techniques; among others. This is achieved through two year’s worth of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician courses as well as practical application, which occurs through a Capstone Project. This final component, which is supervised by a faculty member, encompasses elements of everything the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician students have learned in the undertaking. Speaking of everything students learn, some of the particular topics covered include: ethics in technology and the environment, fundamentals of cooling cycles, mechanical cooling cycle, heating fundamentals, system design and installation, electrical and control systems, heating hydronic fundamentals, air conditioning and distribution systems, and more.
Upon first graduating from the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technician program, students are able to fill positions such as heating technicians or, through affiliated trade apprenticeships, in plumbing, pipe fitting, electrical, sheet metal or refrigeration. Apprenticeship is required after graduation, for those who wish to become trades persons.
