Gift giving is Worldwide, but there are a lot of different cultures and religious traditions. Let us understand some of the reasoning behind the symbolism.
Chinese Cultures have a reserved demeanor. A gift will not be immediately taken, but will be refused three times before they accept the gift. This is so they do not appear greedy. Once the person has taken the gift, you should tell that person you are glad that it had been accepted.
Japanese Culture, gift giving is a form of art, representing respect, gratitude and friendship. The gift is always beautifully wrapped or in a gift box and given with respect. This is a very important ceremony.
The Latin Cultures donít have traditional or formal ceremonies surrounding gift giving. Gifts are a way to make good first impressions and socially showing kindness, appreciation and generosity.
Orthodox Jews can not eat pork or shellfish, and wine is used in religious ceremonies and required to be kosher, even for social drinking. So if you want to give a gift of food or wine, itís best to shop at a kosher store to guarantee you will be giving an acceptable gift.
In Muslim Culture, alcohol is forbidden, even perfume, which has alcohol in it. Food from scavengers, such as, pork, birds and shellfish are also not appropriate for gifts. Some other products that are not appropriate are personal clothing, which are far to personal for gifts. Dogs are unclean, so no dog items, even something with a picture of dogs. A good gift for Muslim is a compass. He must face Mecca everyday for prayers, so matter where he is he will know which way to face.
Hindu Culture, gifts are given and accepted with your right hand or both hands, but never with only your left hand. The left hand is considered unclean since it is used for personal hygiene. They also do not open their gifts at the time they receive them.
So conclusion is every culture have gift giving. No matter what culture the gift is going to there is a gift basket for that culture. Gift baskets come in a wide range of themes, some with food and some without. They are beautifully wrapped and packaged. There are so many styles of gift baskets that you can impress anyone, no matter what their culture is.
